Mobile revolution is here and that is seen largely through the increasing app market. A mobile app i.e. a mobile application is an application developed for mobile phones and smartphone’s. In simple terms, a mobile app is a software programme for ones phone. These can be as simple as a basic flash light application or a dictionary or something similar to a Google Maps navigation app. There are mobile apps developed for entertainment such as those like Facebook, Twitter app i.e social media networks or the ones like Angry Birds mobile app (games). Mobile app are basically a lighter version of the computer application meant for mobile devices / tablet devices which cater to infotainment and entertainment.

The mobile application market is rapidly growing and gaining popularity in the emerging job opportunities market of India. India is the third fastest growing app market of the world. As per Gartner report, India’s active mobile connections will exceed 900 million by 2016; this translates to 72% mobile penetration. According to TRAI in January 2012 the number of active mobile connections in India had reached 659.99 Million and the total mobile subscriber base stands at 903.72 Million.

It is estimated that every Indian user spends nearly 52 minutes per-day using mobile apps with more and more people using smart phones. Market Research firm Gartner estimates that this year alone, mobile users across the globe will pay more than $6.2 billion to buy ‘mobile applications’- i.e. games, social net-working tools, books, productivity and entertainment-based mini programmes for mobile phones. This is asides to the fact that 80 per cent of these will be free downloads anyway this year. Mobile apps have become the business with the fastest turnaround time in the software industry. Another study on the Mobile App market in 2012 will be worth $17.5 billion with an expected 50 billion download as internet usage on mobile devices surges ahead. Many studies have even revealed that going forward internet usage on mobile will surpass desktop computers.

Mobile apps have bought the world closer to your fingertips and promise a revolution of communication. Nokia’s Ovi Store, Android Market, Blackberry App World, Apple’s App store and the upcoming versions of Samsung and Microsoft give thousands of independent developers a relatively quick and easy route to consumer fingertips. The market is bombarded with handsets and newer applications, hence it is expected that the market for mobile applications will be “as big as the internet”. The growth around mobile applications is going to have. This is expected to peak 10 million apps in 2012 according to a study by Gartner. The excitement around mobile applications is going to have a major impact on our economy, and our way of life.

According to Mobizen Insights 52% of the app users are between the ages of 18 and 24, only 11% are females and 36% of the users are outside the major cities.

The future of mobile is services and offerings that are going to run on it. India has more mobile connections than PCs or TVs and landline phones. Mobile operators have seen considerable growth through VAS which has significantly increased demand for mobile application developers.
