Refining industry comprises companies that operate by refining energy resources such as petroleum or oil. Refining any energy resource is a difficult and complex, and it is infrastructure-dependent industrial process of dividing and converting crude oil and its constituent compounds and chemicals into marketable petroleum products like asphalt base, tar, other bituminous materials, diesel fuel, gasoline, paraffin wax, kerosene, jet fuel, and aromatic petrochemicals. Companies in the petroleum refining industry refine crude oil into petroleum products. Petroleum refining involves one or more of the activities such as fractionation, straight distillation of crude oil and cracking. This industry does not include companies that extract crude oil or retail gasoline. Refining requires significant amounts of energy in order to transform streams of crude oil and other additives like chemicals and waste fats and oils into end products, and consequently derives some of its energy from the combustion of crude oil and its products for power generation, or through nearby turbines and utility-scale power generation equipment.

Refineries, the site of petroleum refining, is overwhelmingly concentrated in areas where shipping tankers can supply crude oil and load petroleum products for export and distribution. Refineries are also commonly connected to each other and to sites of production through pipelines in order to minimize logistics and energy costs for transporting low-cost, non-value-added crude oil. The role of refining in producing consumable and useful petroleum products has led to the overwhelming location of refineries in countries with high consumption markets for petroleum products. Common examples include the US, with many refineries on the California coast and the US Gulf Coast (located near major consumption markets and accessible to produced crude oil volumes). Other refineries are located close to oilfields, as is the case with heavy oil and oil sands (bitumen) refining, as the heavy produced materials are costly to ship longer distances.

2 . Current Trends in Refining Industry

The petroleum refining industry has a moderate level of market share concentration, with the four largest companies accounting for a little more than half of industry revenue in 2013. Due to the high capital costs required to maintain refining facilities, large companies dominate the industry. In the past five years, operators divested assets to pad profit margins during the recession, causing market share concentration to fall during the period. This downward trend continued as Brent crude oil prices soared, limiting the profitability of coastal refineries and encouraging some to exit the industry.

This industry is anticipated to expand steadily during the next five years as fuel prices rise and consumption increases. Stronger global growth will boost demand for petroleum products, making it easier for operators to pass down costs. Capacity upgrades will lead the way as industry players invest in infrastructure that can handle more crude oil. However, environmental regulations stipulating the inclusion of renewable fuels will pose a challenge to operators. Growth in petroleum consumption is anticipated to slow as consumers increasingly adopt fuel-efficient technology. But despite of all the hurdles and slowdowns, the revenue is expected to rise till the end of 2018.
