Bhutan is a tiny and remote kingdom nestling in the Himalayas between its powerful neighbours, India and China. Almost completely cut off for centuries, it has tried to let in some aspects of the outside world while fiercely guarding its ancient traditions. The Bhutanese name for Bhutan, Druk Yul, means "Land of the Thunder Dragon" and it only began to open up to outsiders in the 1970s.
Bhutan had estimated population of 0.791 million in the year 2016 and expected to reach 0.871 million by 2022. Bhutan’s unemployment rate was 3.2% of total labor force in 2016, which is expected to remain same till 2022.

Per capita GDP was estimated at USD 2673.53 whereas purchasing power parity (PPP) based per capita GDP was estimated to be at USD 8227.37.

This resulted Bhutan government’s net lending / borrowing negative at BTN 0.245 billion in 2016 indicating that enough financial resources were not made available by the government to boost economic growth.
