They belong to the broader category of fructooligosaccharides (FOS) and are considered prebiotic fibers, which means they can promote the growth and activity of beneficial bacteria in the gut, such as bifidobacteria and lactobacilli.
The term "short chain" in short chain fructooligosaccharides refers to the fact that they typically consist of 2-9 fructose units, as opposed to long-chain fructooligosaccharides, which can have more fructose units linked together. scFOS are not digested in the small intestine, so they pass into the colon largely intact, where they serve as a food source for beneficial gut bacteria. This fermentation process by gut bacteria can have several health benefits, including improved gut health, enhanced nutrient absorption, and potential immune system support.
Currently, short-chain fructooligosaccharides are mainly produced using sucrose concentrate as raw material, with a degree of polymerization between 3 and 5.
