Country Overview (Chemicals)

Major Chemical Producing Nations

Chemicals are an integral part of modern daily life. They are constituents of materials; parts of preparations and products; and are embedded in complex physical systems. Chemicals are used in a wide variety of products and play an important role in the world economy. While chemicals are a significant contributor to national economies, sound chemical management across the lifecycle—from extraction to disposal—is essential not only to avoid significant risks to human health and the environment along with their associated economic costs, but also to maximize the benefits of their contribution to human well-being.

The chemical industry creates an immense variety of products which impinge on virtually every aspect of our lives.

While many of the products from the industry, such as detergents, soaps and perfumes, are purchased directly by the consumer, 70% of chemicals manufactured are used to make products by other industries including other branches of the chemical industry itself. The industry uses a wide range of raw materials, from air and minerals to oil.

There have been breath-taking changes in the chemical industry over the last 10 years or so, not only in Europe and in the US but particularly in China, India, the rest of Asia and Brazil. The chemical industry is one of the largest manufacturing industries in all developed and emerging countries.

With increasing competition worldwide, innovation remains crucial in finding new ways for the industry to satisfy its increasingly sophisticated, demanding and environmentally-conscious consumers.
What does the chemical industry produce?

The products of the chemical industry can be divided into three categories:
  • Basic chemicals
  • Speciality chemicals
  • Consumer chemicals
Several other categorisations are used but this one is simple and helpful in the context of this web site. Outputs range widely, with basic chemicals produced in huge quantities (millions of tonnes) and some speciality chemicals produced in modest kilogramme quantities but with very high value. As explained in the unit on Chemical Reactors, the choice of reactor is often goverened by the amount of chemical that is to be produced.

Israel Petrochemicals Report Q3 2015

Israel Petrochemicals Report Q3 2015

Date Published: May 13 2015
While the petrochemicals sector performed slightly better in 2014 than estimated in the previous quarter, rubber, plastics and chemicals output saw plenty of downside in the final months of the year and going into 2015. However, stronger domestic economic performance coupled with low feedstock costs should support output growth over the short-term, according to BMI's latest Israel Petrochemicals Report.

Kuwait Petrochemicals Report Q3 2015

Date Published: May 13 2015
Kuwait's export-oriented petrochemicals industry will face a major challenge in the face of the Chinese economic slowdown and its effects on the Asian regional market and product prices, but we are optimistic that low naphtha prices will help the country's producers defend their margins. The fall in the price of crude has had a direct impact on the price of naphtha, which is Kuwait's main petrochemical feedstock.

Qatar Petrochemicals Report Q3 2015

Qatar Petrochemicals Report Q3 2015

Date Published: May 13 2015
The competitiveness of Qatar's petrochemicals industry is being put under increasing pressure from the widening of the ethane-naphtha feedstock price differential. The prospect of a lifting of sanctions on Iran further poses threats to Qatar's petrochemicals industry. Rising ethane feedstock costs at a time when the price of alternative feedstock naphtha is at record lows mean that Qatar's petrochemicals industry faces increased competition, with naphtha being used by Qatar's competitors.

Saudi Arabia Petrochemicals Report Q3 2015

Date Published: May 13 2015
While Saudi Arabia is seeking to increase naphtha use in its feedstock mix in the medium term, this will not protect the petrochemicals industry over 2015 when ethane-based production will face the squeeze of falling product prices and lower naphtha feedstock prices for the country's global competitors, according to BMI's latest Saudi Arabia Petrochemicals Report.

The deleterious effects of South Africa's energy crisis has impacted negatively on the country's petrochemicals industry, which saw a significant drop in production in the first quarter of 2015. The Algerian petrochemicals market will come under pressure in 2015 as a result of slowing economic activity caused by falling oil prices. Azerbaijan Petrochemicals Report Q3 2015

Date Published: May 13 2015
The Azerbaijani petrochemicals market will be undermined by slow growth caused by the impact of lower oil prices and the depreciation of the manat on consumer demand. As a result, BMI's latest Azerbaijan Petrochemicals Report expects lower operating rates in the country's small and ageing petrochemicals facilities in 2015. Azerbaijan's petrochemicals industry has been a victim of its narrow focus on hydrocarbons.

Iran Petrochemicals Report Q3 2015

Date Published: May 13 2015
The future of the Iranian petrochemicals industry is brightening, with prospects of a lifting of sanctions. We note, however, that the country will be unable to ramp up production and attract investment in the long term unless talks over its nuclear programme result in a breakthrough. If Western sanctions are lifted, Iran's petrochemicals capacity is expected to reach 100mn tonnes per annum (tpa) by 2020.
