Scope of the Report
The global Aerogel Blanket for EV market size is predicted to grow from US$ 372 million in 2025 to US$ 1,348 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 20.4% from 2026 to 2032.
Aerogel blanket is a flexible, high-efficiency thermal insulation felt that combines nano-aerogel with inorganic fibers and is specially used for power battery modules. The main characteristics of Aerogel felt are low thermal conductivity, and the thermal insulation effect is 2 to 5 times that of traditional insulation materials, which can effectively reduce the thickness of the insulation layer. Secondly, Aerogel felt is relatively hydrophobic, which can effectively prevent moisture from entering the inside of the battery core. ; In addition, Aerogel felt is light and easy to cut, which greatly reduces transportation, installation and use costs. Aerogel felt composite material is reinforced by introducing pre-oxidized fiber filaments, glass fiber, ceramic fiber, carbon fiber and other base materials into the SiO2 Aerogel manufacturing process. After die-cutting, coating and other processing processes, it is finally made into the battery core. used during the period. Processing and coating mainly prevents fiber dust from falling from the Aerogel product during vehicle driving.
In the current market, global production is around 10.681 million m², with an average selling price of about 25.67 USD per m² EXW basis. Aerogel blankets for EV are ultra-thin, low-thermal-conductivity mats supplied as roll goods or flat sheets and used as passive safety barriers to slow or prevent thermal propagation at cell-to-cell, module and pack levels. Commercial products are typically silica aerogel impregnated into fiber felts (predominantly glass fiber, with ceramic or polymeric variants) and optionally factory-finished with foil, films, fabrics or anti-dust coatings to meet handling and durability requirements inside battery packs. These are sold on specification—thickness, width/roll format and λ-value—and integrated by OEMs or tier-one pack makers. Sourcing is program-based: multi-year awards following PPAP-like qualification and abuse testing, with high switching costs once a blanket is designed-in. Gross margins for qualified EV programs generally sit in the twenty to thirty percent range, supported by materials IP, controlled powder management, lamination/coating know-how, long validation cycles, and sticky after-award volumes. Regulations are a core demand driver because blankets help manufacturers demonstrate thermal propagation control required by UN ECE battery rules and China’s GB 38031 safety standard.
Market structure in the 2024 base year is “one scale leader plus several emerging peers.” Aspen Aerogels disclosed 306.8 million USD of Thermal Barrier revenue in 2024—explicitly the same scope as EV/BESS thermal barriers—providing a hard, audited anchor for the global value pool and implying that the Top-5 suppliers control a very high share of revenue. Capacity additions point to diversification from 2025 onward: Armacell announced a new aerogel blanket plant in Pune, India, adding about 1 million m² per year by mid-2025 and doubling available capacity, with EV-relevant ArmaGel products already produced in China; Alkegen entered full-scale commercial production of fiber-enhanced aerogel insulation for EV battery fire protection in mid-2025; and JIOS Aerogel commissioned a Singapore site in late-2023 to mass-produce ultra-thin “Thermal Blade” cell-to-cell barriers. Geographically, demand concentration mirrors EV uptake: China remains the gravity center for electric-car sales, with North America and Europe the next largest demand hubs, and stationary BESS providing a parallel market for similar barrier constructions.
Looking ahead to 2025–2031, the outlook is shaped by regulation, technology and cost. First, compliance pressure will tighten further as OEMs seek demonstrable containment of thermal events under UN ECE and GB 38031 test regimes, sustaining demand for thin, conformable barriers that add minimal mass and volume while delivering hold-time under flame/peak-temperature exposure. Second, technology iteration is moving toward thinner constructions (sub-3 mm classes), better anti-erosion surfaces and engineered stacks that combine aerogel with ceramic or polymeric layers to balance compressive compliance, vibration robustness and thermal performance—supporting expansion from premium passenger programs into commercial vehicles and BESS. Third, cost curves are improving through larger continuous lines, regionalization of blanket finishing, and automation of lamination and coating—expanding the reachable bill-of-materials window and reducing fit-up waste. Key bottlenecks include dust control and worker-exposure compliance, capex for stable large-format lines, and lengthy OEM qualification that gates revenue ramps. Net-net, industry concentration should ease gradually as new capacity from Armacell, Alkegen and Asian producers comes online, while China remains the demand anchor and BESS adds a second leg of volume growth; nonetheless, incumbents with proven program wins, validated specifications and mature operations are positioned to retain pricing power at the high-performance end of the market.
