Scope of the Report

The global X-Ray Security Screening Equipment market size is predicted to grow from US$ 3,278 million in 2025 to US$ 5,378 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 7.4% from 2026 to 2032.

X-ray security screening equipment is a device or system that utilizes X-ray transmission, dual-energy or multi-energy material identification, multi-view imaging, computed tomography, backscatter imaging, and digital image processing technologies to conduct non-invasive security inspections of personnel, mail, parcels, carry-on baggage, checked baggage, air cargo, palletized cargo, vehicles, railway freight cars, and the interior of containers without disassembling the object being inspected. Products are primarily used to identify firearms, knives, explosives, drugs, contraband, smuggled goods, hidden compartments, and abnormal cargo declarations. Smiths Detection, Rapidan Systems, Leidos, and Tongfang Weishi's existing product portfolios all cover X-ray inspection of baggage, parcels, cargo, or vehicles, with some manufacturers also offering CT, backscatter, and low-dose human X-ray inspection products. A system typically consists of an X-ray generator, collimation and beam control devices, a detector array, a transport or scanning mechanism, a radiation shielding structure, an image acquisition and processing unit, an operating terminal, and material identification and threat recognition algorithms. Vehicle and container systems may also include gantry frames, mobile chassis, vehicle positioning, radiation shielding zones, and remote control facilities; portable systems typically consist of portable X-ray sources, digital detection panels, and imaging terminals. Not all equipment is equipped with conveyor belts, therefore, it is inappropriate to define "conveyor mechanisms" as a necessary component of all products. This report covers portable suspicious item inspection equipment, cabinet mail and parcel inspection equipment, walk-in baggage and cargo X-ray security scanners, airport carry-on and checked baggage CT inspection systems, air cargo and pallet inspection systems, low-dose human body X-ray inspection systems, and high-energy vehicle, rail freight car, and container inspection systems. The report only includes systems with independent X-ray imaging capabilities that can be delivered as complete inspection equipment. Millimeter-wave body scanners, metal detection gates, handheld metal detectors, explosive trace detectors, liquid detectors, radioactive material monitoring equipment, industrial non-destructive testing equipment, food and pharmaceutical foreign object detection equipment, and medical X-ray equipment are excluded. In 2025, the global shipment volume of X-Ray Security Screening Equipment is approximately 31,000 units, with a weighted average ex-factory price of approximately US$108,100 per unit and a manufacturing gross margin of approximately 28% to 38%.

The X-Ray Security Screening Equipment market is not a rapid shift from 2D equipment to CT, but rather a two-tiered structure where 2D equipment maintains shipment volume while CT equipment drives market value. Ordinary single-view and dual-view systems remain widely used in hotels, government buildings, schools, courts, prisons, factories, rail transit, and small to medium-sized logistics facilities, characterized by large procurement volumes, intense price competition, and numerous regional brands. Airport carry-on and checked baggage screening is the most concentrated area for CT upgrades. The US TSA's CT procurement framework covers up to 1,214 units, and its capital planning indicates that CT deployment remains a multi-year upgrade project. Smiths Detection announced the sale of its 2,000th HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX in March 2026, indicating that airport CT has entered a stage of large-scale commercial deployment, rather than simply a pilot program. The main value of CT is not only in providing rotatable 3D images, but more importantly, in generating voxel data and tomographic slices, providing a more complete data foundation for the automatic identification of explosives, liquids, and complex obstructions. The costs of X-ray sources, detectors, rotating or distributed acquisition architectures, reconstruction computing platforms, and certification for CT equipment are all higher than those for ordinary 2D equipment. Therefore, CT upgrades are usually accompanied by modifications to security checkpoints, automated tray return systems, remote image interpretation, and network management systems. The overall investment in airport projects is significantly higher than the price of a single scanning device. Growth in the non-aviation market is concentrated in customs, ports, borders, logistics, prisons, critical infrastructure, and industrial parks. While general baggage and parcel equipment continues to see growth primarily in quantity, high-performance vehicle and container systems are less common but have higher unit value, project delivery complexity, and after-sales service revenue. OSI Systems disclosed that its Security Division revenue grew by 14.7% in fiscal year 2025, driven by cargo and vehicle inspection systems, checkpoint equipment, and service revenue, indicating that large-scale non-aviation projects and existing equipment services are also important components of the market. Future competition will extend beyond traditional penetration, resolution, channel size, and processing speed to include AI-powered contraband identification, low false alarm rates, remote centralized image interpretation, cross-brand equipment networking, open software interfaces, and cybersecurity. Smiths Detection has already used iCMORE for automatic target recognition in images of baggage, cargo, vehicles, and containers; NucMind, based on a large security inspection model, is also advancing its platform. However, "autonomous interpretation" has not yet become the standard operating mode in most markets. Currently, the mainstream architecture still relies on algorithms for automatic tagging or alarms, with operators handling confirmation and response. This is because security inspection systems need to meet regulatory certification, traceability, liability definition, and low false negative rates. Therefore, the intelligent classification in this report should adopt a step-by-step approach: "human interpretation—AI-assisted interpretation—automatic threat identification—autonomous interpretation," rather than merging "networked" and "fully automated" into the same category. Long-term industry barriers include high-voltage radiation source and detector design, radiation safety, CT reconstruction algorithms, automatic threat identification training data, airport and government certifications, complex project delivery, and a global after-sales service network. Approximately 51% of Smiths Detection's sales come from the aftermarket, indicating that maintenance, upgrades, spare parts, and software support have significant value throughout the equipment's lifecycle; however, these revenues should not be included in the pure equipment market size.
