Scope of the Report

The global Lactitol market size is predicted to grow from US$ 903 million in 2025 to US$ 1,396 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.6% from 2026 to 2032.

In 2025, global sales volume for lactitol is projected to reach 345 million tons, with an average price of $2,675 per ton.

Lactitol is a disaccharide sugar alcohol derived from cow's milk (lactose) that is used as a low-calorie sweetener and a medical osmotic laxative. It has about 30–40% of the sweetness of sugar, boasts a negligible glycemic index, and helps treat chronic constipation by drawing water into the intestines.

The raw material system for lactitol production consists of three core components: lactose, hydrogen, and catalysts. Lactose serves as the critical raw material and is typically sourced from whey (a byproduct of cheese production) or skimmed milk powder. With the global annual output of dairy products exceeding 900 million tons, whey resources are abundant and relatively low in cost; however, lactose prices fluctuate in response to global dairy industry cycles, shifts in demand for whey protein (particularly high-value applications such as Whey Protein Isolate, or WPI, which divert supply), and the impact of climatic conditions on dairy farming. In 2024, the market price for lactose stood at approximately 5,963 RMB per ton, thereby establishing a cost benchmark for lactitol production. Hydrogen, utilized as a reactant in the hydrogenation process, can be obtained through natural gas reforming, water electrolysis, or as a byproduct of the chlor-alkali industry; its price is influenced by energy costs and policies regarding "green hydrogen." Regarding catalysts, nickel-based catalysts (such as Raney nickel) offer low costs but are prone to nickel leaching and deactivation, necessitating frequent replacement; conversely, ruthenium-based catalysts exhibit high activity and longevity but come at a high price point. Consequently, the choice of catalyst directly impacts both product purity and production costs. In terms of cost structure, raw material costs account for 50%–65% of total costs; among these, lactose constitutes the single largest cost item (accounting for approximately 60%–70% of raw material costs), while hydrogen and catalysts each account for 10%–15%. Processing costs encompass the energy consumption of high-pressure equipment used in hydrogenation reactions, the steam and electricity consumed during crystallization and separation, as well as post-processing steps such as drying and sieving; energy costs account for 20%–25% of the total. Equipment depreciation accounts for 10%–15%, reflecting the substantial capital investment required for hydrogenation reactors, high-pressure hydrogen systems, precision crystallization equipment, and cleanroom facilities. Furthermore, pharmaceutical-grade products must adhere to stringent USP/EP/JP standards; consequently, the costs associated with quality testing (covering heavy metals, microbial contamination, and isomer purity) and certification are significantly higher than those for food-grade products. Additionally, the spray drying and granulation processes required for particulate products entail further capital investment. As global dairy supply chains stabilize and the efficiency of catalytic hydrogenation processes improves, the production costs for lactitol are expected to gradually optimize. However, the supply of raw lactose faces long-term risks due to competition from other high-value utilization applications for whey (such as the extraction of whey protein or the enzymatic hydrolysis of lactose to produce galacto-oligosaccharides).
