Scope of the Report

The global Electronic Chart Display and Information System market size is predicted to grow from US$ 303 million in 2025 to US$ 476 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.4% from 2026 to 2032.

An Electronic Chart Display and Information System, or ECDIS, is a certified shipborne navigation system that displays official electronic navigational chart data together with real-time inputs from positioning sensors, gyrocompass, speed log, echo sounder, AIS, radar, alarm management and bridge network systems. Its core functions include voyage planning, route safety checking, route monitoring, own-ship positioning, hazard alerts, chart updating, navigation recording and backup navigation. This study focuses on IMO/SOLAS-compliant maritime ECDIS systems, backup ECDIS, ECDIS modules embedded in integrated bridge systems, warship ECDIS, inland ECDIS where relevant, and system upgrades related to S-57/S-63 and the transition toward S-100/S-101 electronic chart standards.

Based on our research, the ECDIS industry has moved from a regulation-led initial adoption cycle to a mature replacement and software-upgrade market. The mandatory carriage phase created a large installed base across SOLAS-class vessels, while the next phase is being driven by newbuild bridge packages, replacement of ageing units, compliance with updated IHO and IMO requirements, cybersecurity requirements for connected bridge systems, and fleet operators’ need for auditable chart management. ECDIS is therefore not a pure hardware category. It is a safety-critical navigation platform where type approval, chart data compatibility, route monitoring reliability, user familiarity, service coverage and long-term software support are often more important than the upfront equipment price.

From a product-roadmap perspective, the most important change is the transition toward connected, software-defined and S-100-ready navigation systems. Future competitiveness will be shaped by the ability to support S-57 and S-100 dual-fuel operation, secure chart updates, radar and AIS overlays, bridge network integration, remote diagnostics, cybersecurity compliance and fleet-wide digital navigation workflows. This favours companies with both certified onboard products and recurring data/service capability. It also explains why acquisitions and brand consolidation in digital navigation are strategically important: the market is moving from one-off equipment sales toward lifecycle navigation services.

From the demand structure perspective, ECDIS demand is increasingly driven by replacement, compliance upgrades and lifecycle service rather than first-time mandatory installation. Newbuild vessels continue to generate baseline demand, especially where ECDIS is bundled into integrated bridge systems, but the larger and more stable opportunity comes from the existing SOLAS vessel fleet, where ageing ECDIS units, software-version requirements, chart-data compatibility, cybersecurity expectations and the transition toward S-100/S-101 standards are pushing shipowners to upgrade. In addition, naval vessels, government fleets, offshore support vessels, inland vessels and high-end workboats create differentiated long-tail demand, often requiring WECDIS capability, inland ECDIS functions, radar overlay, remote update, fleet-level compliance management or project-based integration. This demand structure means the market should not be evaluated only by annual hardware shipments. A more accurate view is to combine new installations, replacement systems, software licenses, upgrade packages, maintenance contracts and digital navigation services. As a result, suppliers with a large installed base, proven type-approved products, global service coverage and recurring software or chart-management capability are better positioned than small hardware-only vendors.
