A silicon carbide seed crystal is a small, high-quality single-crystal piece (often wafer-shaped) with a defined crystallographic structure and orientation, deliberately introduced to initiate and control the growth of a larger crystal. In vapor/sublimation growth, the seed provides the preferred surface so incoming species deposit and extend the lattice in the seed’s orientation.

Upstream, SiC seed crystals are typically prepared from previously grown SiC bulk crystals (boules/ingots) by slicing, grinding/lapping, and fine polishing to reach a damage-controlled, highly flat growth surface. The seed’s polytype, surface condition, and preparation are critical because seed quality and subsurface damage strongly influence defect evolution in subsequent growth.

Downstream, the seed crystal is mounted in a PVT/sublimation crucible, where SiC source material sublimes and vapor species transport toward the cooler seed surface and crystallize, producing large SiC single crystals for the semiconductor supply chain. These boules are then processed into substrates for power electronics and RF/microwave applications, and seed-driven process development is also a major activity in industrial and research crystal growth lines.

In 2025, global production of silicon carbide seed crystal reached approximately 162 K Pcs, with an average global market price of around US$ 326/Pcs. Production capacity varies significantly among manufacturers, with gross profit margins ranging from approximately 5% to 30%.
