Scope of the Report
The global Cable Joint Temperature Monitoring System market size is predicted to grow from US$ 859 million in 2025 to US$ 1,531 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 8.4% from 2026 to 2032.
Cable Joint Temperature Monitoring System refers to fixed online hardware that measures the temperature of power-cable joints, terminations or separable connectors and transmits the data to a local controller, asset-management platform or SCADA system.
The market includes wired sensors, passive and active wireless systems, point fiber-optic sensors and distributed fiber-optic systems when cable-joint locations form part of the monitored asset. Portable thermal-imaging instruments, detection-only components, complete cable accessories, switchgear-contact monitoring and software services are excluded.
The 2025 benchmark ASP is US$3,200 per unit, global sales volume is approximately 260.938k units, and the modeled average gross margin is approximately 36%.
The upstream industry chain includes temperature-sensing elements, RFID and SAW chips, optical fibers, optoelectronic components, data-acquisition boards, communication modules and enclosures. The midstream includes sensor packaging, insulation design, reader development, optical interrogation, calibration, communication integration and system testing. The downstream mainly covers electric utilities, industrial facilities, renewable-energy projects, transportation infrastructure and critical electrical facilities.
Cable joints are among the most thermally vulnerable locations in a power-cable system. Poor crimping, loose connections, oxidation, contamination, mechanical stress and increasing contact resistance can create localized heating that is not immediately visible from the outside.
Surface temperature is not always equal to conductor or internal-joint temperature. Insulation thickness, joint structure, load current, ambient temperature and thermal resistance between the conductor and the sensor can create a significant time delay and temperature difference.
Temperature should therefore be evaluated together with load current and ambient conditions. A fixed alarm threshold alone may produce delayed warnings during high loads or unnecessary alarms when ambient temperature changes rapidly.
Wireless point sensors are relatively economical and suitable for retrofitting accessible joints. Their performance depends on sensor attachment, power supply, radio propagation, enclosure design and battery or energy-harvesting reliability.
CT-powered sensors reduce battery replacement requirements but may not operate reliably below their minimum starting current. Battery-powered sensors can operate without current flow but require lifetime and replacement management.
Passive sensors eliminate local batteries and can be appropriate in high-voltage environments, but reading distance, antenna location and surrounding metal structures can affect communication stability.
Fiber-optic sensors are electrically passive and immune to electromagnetic interference, making them suitable for high-voltage, high-field and hazardous environments. Point fiber sensors are used at selected joints, while distributed sensing can produce a continuous temperature profile over long cable routes.
Distributed temperature sensing is valuable for detecting hotspots along tunnels and cable routes, but spatial resolution and thermal coupling must be considered. A sensing fiber mounted near a cable may measure the surrounding temperature rather than the exact internal temperature of a joint.
A complete monitoring system requires more than accurate sensors. Time synchronization, data filtering, communication reliability, alarm logic, historical trends, SCADA integration and cybersecurity all influence practical performance.
Temperature-rise trends are often more useful than a single absolute reading. Comparing phases, adjacent joints and similar loading conditions can help identify gradual deterioration before the temperature reaches a fixed alarm limit.
Future competition will increasingly focus on self-powered sensors, maintenance-free operation, smaller sensor dimensions, improved thermal models, edge analytics, condition-based alarms, wireless-network reliability and integration with digital substations and asset-management platforms.
