Scope of the Report

The global Special Cargo Service market size is predicted to grow from US$ 11,040 million in 2025 to US$ 161,551 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% from 2026 to 2032.

Special Cargo Service refer to the planning, coordination and execution of logistics solutions for cargo that requires dedicated handling because of its physical dimensions, weight, value, hazardous classification, temperature sensitivity, biological characteristics, perishability, security exposure, urgency or regulatory status.

Special Cargo Service are defined by the operational and regulatory complexity of the cargo rather than by a single mode of transportation. Project equipment, hazardous chemicals, pharmaceuticals, live animals, perishables, valuables and aircraft-on-ground shipments may move by different combinations of air, ocean, road and rail, but they all require dedicated procedures, trained personnel, documented responsibility and effective exception management. Based on our research, the economic value of this market extends beyond the purchase of transport capacity. It includes transport engineering, route surveys, lifting and load securing, temperature validation, specialized storage, dangerous-goods documentation, customs coordination, real-time monitoring and secure chain-of-custody services. The broad supplier universe therefore includes freight forwarders, airlines, heavy-haul operators, handlers and regional specialists, whereas the Core Formal List is limited to providers with a sustained, verifiable and directly customer-facing service capability. This distinction explains why the longlist is materially larger than the competitive ranking. IATA’s standards and certification systems for pharmaceuticals, perishables and live animals also demonstrate that special cargo has become an institutionalized quality-management discipline supported by validated facilities, procedures, personnel and supplier-control systems rather than an informal extension of general freight forwarding.

From a supply perspective, the industry consists of four overlapping competitive groups: global integrated logistics groups, specialist project-logistics providers, regulated-cargo specialists and airlines with dedicated special-cargo products. Large forwarders such as DSV, DHL, Kuehne+Nagel, CEVA and Nippon Express benefit from purchasing scale, global customer relationships, multi-modal networks and the ability to manage complex shipments across multiple jurisdictions. Specialist companies such as deugro, Mammoet, Sarens and Fagioli compete through engineering expertise, heavy-haul assets and execution experience, while healthcare, cryogenic and chemical-logistics providers rely on sector-specific quality systems, licensed facilities and highly trained staff. Consolidation accelerated during 2024 and 2025: DSV completed the acquisition of Schenker, CEVA unified Bolloré Logistics under the CEVA brand, Nippon Express completed its acquisition of cargo-partner, UPS combined Marken, MNX and Polar Speed, and ANA acquired Nippon Cargo Airlines. These transactions have increased the scale of leading groups, but they are unlikely to eliminate regional specialists because local permits, route knowledge, port access and project-specific execution remain important barriers to full consolidation.

Demand growth will remain uneven across cargo categories. Conventional oil and gas, mining and infrastructure projects will continue to generate substantial project-logistics revenue, although the timing of large projects creates year-to-year volatility. Pharmaceutical products, clinical-trial materials, radiopharmaceuticals, cell and gene therapies and high-value medical equipment generate more stable demand and require more stringent temperature, security and documentation controls. Renewable-energy equipment, lithium batteries, energy-storage systems, wind-turbine components, semiconductor equipment and data-center infrastructure are increasingly creating demand at the intersection of project logistics, dangerous-goods compliance and time-critical transport. IATA reported record global air-cargo demand in 2025, with particularly strong growth in Asia-Pacific and on Europe–Asia and intra-Asia trade lanes. This change in trade flows is expected to increase demand for redesigned routings, alternative hubs, charter capacity and multimodal contingency planning rather than simply shifting existing volumes between providers.

Competition is expected to shift further away from basic capacity procurement toward shipment visibility, validation and exception control. Temperature, humidity, vibration, tilt, location and unauthorized-opening data are increasingly being incorporated into life-sciences, semiconductor and high-value cargo processes. Electronic documentation and automated compliance checks should reduce administrative errors and improve handovers between forwarders, carriers and ground handlers. Nevertheless, digital platforms cannot fully replace transport engineering, dangerous-goods accountability, animal-welfare procedures, validated pharmaceutical quality systems or the physical execution of heavy-lift projects. Large groups are likely to continue acquiring healthcare, chemical and project-logistics capabilities, while regional operators will defend their positions through permits, dedicated vehicles, tank containers, temperature-controlled facilities, specialized lifting equipment and local engineering teams. The global market is expected to grow at a mid-single-digit rate, but profitability will depend on increasing the share of engineering, compliance and assurance services while controlling insurance claims, safety incidents, temperature excursions and project delays.
