Scope of the Report

The global Mahogany Logs & Lumber market size is predicted to grow from US$ 1,761 million in 2025 to US$ 2,745 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.3% from 2026 to 2032.

Mahogany logs and lumber refer to natural roundwood harvested from trees of the genus Swietenia (family Meliaceae), as well as from the widely accepted commercial substitutes Khaya spp. (African mahogany) and Entandrophragma cylindricum (Sapele), and the sawn timber produced by sawing, drying and grading such logs. Genuine mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla, Swietenia mahagoni) is native to Central and South America. Due to over‑exploitation, Swietenia macrophylla is listed in CITES Appendix II, and its trade is strictly regulated. African mahogany (Khaya spp.) and Sapele are now the dominant species in global mahogany‑type timber trade, sourced primarily from the tropical rainforests of West and Central Africa (Côte d‘Ivoire, Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon, Gabon, Republic of Congo, etc.). Mahogany wood is characterized by straight or interlocked grain, fine to medium texture, high density and hardness, excellent machining and finishing properties, good durability and dimensional stability. It is widely used in high‑end furniture, cabinets, decorative veneer, musical instruments (pianos, guitars), doors, flooring, marine interiors, precision instrument casings, and other high‑grade joinery and architectural millwork applications. Mahogany logs and lumber occupy a significant position in global tropical hardwood trade and serve as a core raw material for high‑end solid wood processing.

Mahogany‑type timber is a core category in global high‑end hardwood trade. Genuine mahogany (Swietenia) commands extremely high prices due to resource scarcity and CITES restrictions, while African mahogany (Khaya) and sapele dominate the market through stable supply and competitive costs. The price gap between genuine and African mahogany remains wide, driven by availability, regulatory intensity, and decorative grain characteristics.

Gross margins vary significantly along the supply chain. Large African forestry companies with captive concessions and integrated logging, milling and export operations achieve relatively high margins. Pure sawmillers and traders face compressed margins due to raw material cost volatility and export policy shifts. Plantation mahogany operators in Fiji and Indonesia, constrained by long investment cycles and limited harvest volumes, maintain moderate but stable profitability.

Downstream consumption is dominated by high‑end furniture manufacturing and architectural millwork, followed by musical instruments (piano cases and guitar bodies), marine interiors and decorative veneer. Mahogany’s excellent workability and dimensional stability make it a preferred choice for luxury custom furniture. Rising import demand from Asian manufacturing hubs, especially China and Vietnam, has become the primary engine of global trade growth.

Incremental demand comes from three sources. First, the expanding middle class in emerging Asian markets increasingly favors European‑style solid wood furniture, driving mahogany lumber imports. Second, the growing luxury yacht and private jet interior segment requires mahogany‘s durability, stability and decorative appeal. Third, the shift from log to sawn timber exports from African producers lowers processing costs for Asian buyers, stimulating additional orders.

The competitive landscape features oligopolistic supply from Africa and fragmented consumption globally. A few large forestry groups in Gabon, Cameroon and the Republic of Congo control most of the concession rights and export volumes of African mahogany and sapele, with some holding FSC certification to serve European high‑end markets. Plantation mahogany in Fiji and Indonesia primarily supplies Asia. China’s mahogany processing sector is highly fragmented, with most players lacking upstream resource control.

Key uncertainties include four factors. First, CITES restrictions could expand, tightening controls on genuine mahogany and raising compliance requirements for substitutes. Second, log export bans or higher export duties by some African producers will push trade toward sawn timber and semi‑finished products, reshaping traditional supply chains. Third, substitution by engineered wood and man‑made panels in applications such as door cores and panel‑style furniture may divert demand away from mahogany. Fourth, long‑term climate change and pest impacts on West and Central African natural mahogany forests pose potential supply disruption risks.

In summary, the mahogany logs and lumber market will experience steady growth over the next five years. Genuine mahogany will remain a niche high‑end channel due to supply constraints. African mahogany and sapele, as the main alternatives, will continue to expand market share, fueled by sustained demand from Asian manufacturing hubs. Industry competition will shift from pure resource extraction toward cost control, certification compliance, and customer‑specific services. Large, integrated players with captive forests, milling capacity and international certification will gain pricing power, while small‑scale intermediaries face margin compression and marginalization.
