R-600a, or isobutane, is a natural hydrocarbon refrigerant widely used in modern domestic and commercial refrigerators for its excellent environmental profile and high energy efficiency. It is eco-friendly, featuring near-zero Global Warming Potential (GWP) and zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP), but it is highly flammable (A3 classification). In 2025, global R-600a production reached approximately 7500 MT.

R-600a (isobutane) is mainly driven by the global shift toward low-GWP refrigerants in domestic refrigeration. Because it is a hydrocarbon refrigerant with very low global warming potential, manufacturers use it to help meet tighter environmental rules and HFC phase-down policies under frameworks such as the Kigali Amendment and related national regulations. UNEP technical assessments and EPA market analysis both indicate that hydrocarbons, including R-600a, have gained strong traction in household refrigerators as producers replace higher-GWP options like HFC-134a. EPA cites TEAP data showing R-600a is used in about 75% of new domestic refrigeration units globally, which reflects how regulation is directly reshaping refrigerant choice.

A second major driver is energy efficiency and appliance-maker economics. R-600a is widely adopted in refrigerators and freezers because it can deliver strong thermodynamic performance with relatively low charge sizes, helping manufacturers meet appliance efficiency targets while keeping operating costs attractive. UNEP and related industry assessments also note that domestic refrigeration is the segment where hydrocarbons have made the deepest inroads, supported by mature product design, large installed manufacturing capacity, and broad market familiarity. The main constraint is flammability, which raises safety, technician training, and standards-compliance needs, but for sealed household appliances the market has still expanded because the efficiency and climate benefits outweigh those barriers in many jurisdictions.
