概観

Scope of the Report

The global Commercial Vehicle Friction Material market size is predicted to grow from US$ 9,442 million in 2025 to US$ 12,403 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 4.1% from 2026 to 2032.

Commercial vehicle friction materials are engineered composite components installed in truck, van, bus, coach braking systems to convert vehicle kinetic energy into heat through controlled friction. They are supplied mainly as disc brake pads, drum brake linings, brake-shoe friction blocks, and parking-brake friction components. Major upstream materials include phenolic and modified phenolic resins, steel and other metal fibers, aramid fibers, mineral fibers, glass fibers, graphite, barite, rubber, metal powders, alumina, abrasives, lubricants, and functional fillers. Compared with passenger-car products, commercial-vehicle friction materials place greater emphasis on loaded-vehicle thermal stability, fade resistance, wear life, drum or rotor compatibility, and total cost of ownership. Core downstream markets include OEM assembly and independent aftermarket replacement.

In 2025, global commercial vehicle friction material production reached approximately 200 million sets, with an average global market price is $45 per set.

From a global industry perspective, commercial vehicle friction materials generally face more demanding duty cycles than standard passenger-car braking materials because they operate under higher gross vehicle weight, larger axle loads, higher braking energy, frequent stop-start driving, long downhill operation, full-load transportation, construction-site usage and variable climate conditions. Heavy-duty trucks, construction vehicles, refuse trucks, highway tractors and buses continue to use drum brakes or mixed disc-and-drum configurations in many applications, so drum brake linings remain an important commercial-vehicle friction-material category. Bendix's heavy-duty brake range covers heavy-haul, construction, refuse and highway truck applications and emphasizes application-engineered linings, brake life and maintenance-cost reduction.

Compared with passenger-car materials, commercial vehicle friction materials place greater emphasis on high-temperature fade resistance, thermal-crack risk control, wear life, predictable braking force, heavy-load low-speed performance, rotor or drum compatibility, riveted or bonded lining reliability and lifecycle cost. Under long downhill braking, repeated braking and high axle loads, materials must maintain stable friction while avoiding severe fade, lining degradation, abnormal wear, drum cracking and excessive brake noise.

In terms of technology routes, commercial vehicle friction materials commonly include non-asbestos organic, low-metallic, semi-metallic, high-metallic and high-temperature heavy-duty formulations. Drum brake linings typically place stronger emphasis on heat resistance, wear resistance, crush resistance and rivet stability, while disc pads focus more on high-temperature friction stability, controlled wear, lower noise and rotor compatibility. The industry is moving toward low-copper or copper-free chemistry, lower dust, lower wear, higher thermal stability, lower noise, corrosion resistance, longer service life and higher batch consistency. The U.S. EPA's Copper-Free Brake Initiative called for reducing copper in brake pads to 0.5% by weight by 2025 while reducing mercury, lead, cadmium, asbestiform fibers and chromium-six salts; its signatories include heavy-duty vehicle and related industry organizations.

Electrified commercial vehicles will not eliminate friction braking; instead, they change its operating pattern. Electric light trucks, electric buses and hybrid commercial vehicles can use regenerative braking to reduce routine friction-brake activation, but fully loaded emergency braking, long downhill braking, low-speed stopping, low-adhesion conditions and limited regenerative capacity still depend heavily on friction brakes. Lower routine brake use can increase risks related to rotor or drum corrosion, lining adhesion, low-speed noise and braking response after extended parking. Consequently, electric commercial vehicles place greater emphasis on low-temperature response, corrosion resistance, low drag, anti-sticking behavior and stable braking under high loads. At the regulatory level, the EU's Euro 7 framework has incorporated brake-particle emissions into vehicle type-approval requirements, reinforcing the direction toward lower-wear, lower-dust and more stable friction-material formulations.
