Scope of the Report

The global Grid-side Energy Storage and Power Supply Side Energy Storage market size is predicted to grow from US$ 22,483 million in 2025 to US$ 68,808 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 15.7% from 2026 to 2032.

The application scenarios of energy storage can be categorized into three segments: the generation side, also known as the power supply side; the grid side; and the user side. The business models vary across these segments. On the generation side, energy storage mainly serves to match power production with consumption and reduce pressure on the power grid. On the grid side, energy storage is primarily used to reduce or defer investment in grid equipment, alleviate grid congestion, and provide ancillary services such as peak shaving and frequency regulation for the power system. On the user side, energy storage helps users reduce electricity costs through models such as peak shaving and valley filling, or self-generation and self-consumption of photovoltaic power.

Generation side: Generation-side energy storage refers to electric energy storage facilities built within the grid-connection point of power generation facilities such as thermal power plants, wind farms, and photovoltaic power stations, or within the grid-connection point of aggregated power generation stations. At present, from the perspective of application, generation-side energy storage mainly includes thermal power-storage joint frequency regulation and energy storage paired with renewable energy. The market size for thermal power-storage joint frequency regulation is limited, while renewable energy paired with storage has become the main application scenario for electrochemical energy storage on the generation side.

Grid side: Grid-side energy storage refers to energy storage resources within the power system that can be centrally dispatched by power dispatching institutions, respond to the flexibility needs of the grid, and play a system-wide and overall role.

From the demand side, the fundamental driver of growth in overseas grid-side and generation-side energy storage lies in the increasing demand for flexibility resources in power systems. As the share of installed renewable energy capacity, such as photovoltaic and wind power, continues to rise, power systems are seeing significantly greater demand for peak shaving, frequency regulation, capacity support, reserve capacity, congestion management, and renewable energy consumption. As a flexibility resource with fast response speed, a relatively short deployment cycle, and modular scalability, energy storage systems are playing an increasingly important role in renewable energy grid integration and the stable operation of power grids. According to BNEF statistics, global newly installed energy storage capacity reached 112 GW/307 GWh in 2025, making energy storage one of the core infrastructure components in the global power system transition.

From a regional perspective, North America remains the largest single overseas regional market, although its share is expected to decline gradually. In 2025, sales in the North American market amounted to US$10,261.98 million, accounting for approximately 44.65% of the overseas market. This figure is expected to reach US$25,726.59 million by 2032, representing approximately 37.73% of the market. The U.S. market will continue to contribute the vast majority of demand in North America. However, as the market base expands and challenges related to grid-connection queues, trade policies, and supply chain localization requirements increase, the North American market is expected to shift from the rapid growth seen in the early stage to more stable growth.

The European market is expected to maintain a relatively high growth rate. In 2025, sales in the European market amounted to US$4,727.43 million and are expected to reach US$14,725.55 million by 2032. Europe’s energy storage market was driven by residential energy storage for a relatively long period in the past. However, starting in 2025, utility-scale energy storage has become the main driver of newly installed capacity in Europe. As the share of renewable power generation in Europe increases, electricity market price volatility expands, and capacity mechanisms and flexibility resource procurement frameworks continue to improve, the European grid-side and generation-side energy storage market will continue to expand. Data from SolarPower Europe show that newly installed battery energy storage capacity in the EU reached 27.1 GWh in 2025, with utility-scale systems becoming the main source of new capacity.

The Asia-Pacific market excluding China will form a multi-layered market structure centered on Australia, Japan, South Korea, India, Taiwan, and Southeast Asia. Australia will continue to benefit from large-scale renewable energy grid integration and demand for grid regulation. The Japanese and South Korean markets place greater emphasis on grid stability, reserve capacity, and local safety standards. The Indian market has a relatively low base but significant growth potential, and future growth will be jointly driven by renewable energy bases, tendering mechanisms, and government support policies. The Southeast Asian market remains at the project pipeline and demonstration stage, but it offers considerable long-term growth potential.

The Middle East and Africa, together with Latin America, are expected to show the greatest growth elasticity in the future. In 2025, sales in this regional market amounted to US$4,152.92 million and are expected to reach US$15,981.83 million by 2032, with a CAGR of approximately 19.9% from 2026 to 2032, the highest among the four major regions. The Middle Eastern market will be driven by large-scale renewable energy bases and solar-plus-storage projects in countries such as Saudi Arabia and the UAE. The African market will mainly be driven by grid reliability needs and power shortages in countries such as South Africa. The Latin American market will be centered on countries such as Chile, Brazil, and Mexico, with demand coming from high renewable energy penetration, electricity market trading, mining loads, and regional grid stability.

From the perspective of product structure, longer-duration energy storage is the most certain technological and product trend. Systems with a duration of less than one hour are mainly used for frequency regulation and instantaneous response, and their market share is expected to continue declining. Two- to four-hour systems will continue to meet most demand for peak shaving, arbitrage, and renewable energy output smoothing, making them the mainstream product type in the medium term. Systems with a duration of four hours or more will become the fastest-growing product category, with sales expected to increase from US$5,425.18 million in 2025 to US$38,657.75 million in 2032, accounting for 56.69% of revenue by 2032. As renewable energy penetration rises and the need for intraday and interday balancing increases, overseas demand for energy storage systems with a duration of four hours or more will continue to strengthen.

From an application perspective, standalone energy storage and renewable energy paired with storage are expected to remain the dominant application segments over the long term. By 2032, sales revenue from standalone energy storage is projected to reach USD 31,975.77 million, representing 46.89% of the market, while revenue from renewable energy paired with storage is expected to reach USD 27,862.56 million, accounting for 40.87%. Together, the two segments will represent nearly 88% of the market, indicating that the mainstream business models for overseas grid-side and generation-side energy storage are increasingly centered on standalone energy storage plants and storage facilities integrated with large-scale renewable energy projects. Frequency regulation for thermal power plants, substations, and other applications will continue to offer market opportunities, although their overall shares will remain relatively limited.
