概観
Scope of the Report
The global EPE Encapsulation Film market size is predicted to grow from US$ 5,481 million in 2025 to US$ 9,813 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 8.1% from 2026 to 2032.
An encapsulant is used to provide adhesion between the solar cells, the top surface and the rear surface of the PV module. The encapsulant should be stable at elevated temperatures and high UV exposure. It should also be optically transparent and should have a low thermal resistance. EVA (ethyl vinyl acetate) is the most commonly used encapsulant material. EVA comes in thin sheets which are inserted between the solar cells and the top surface and the rear surface. This sandwich is then heated to 150 °C to polymerize the EVA and bond the module together.
Encapsulant materials used in photovoltaic (PV) modules serve multiple purposes, it provides optical coupling of PV cells and protection against environmental stress. Polymers must perform these functions under prolonged periods of high temperature, humidity, and UV radiation. When PV panels were first developed in the 1960s and the 1970s, the dominant encapsulants were based on polydimethyl siloxane (PDMS). Ethylene-co-vinyl acetate (EVA) is currently the dominant encapsulant chosen for PV applications, not because it has the best combination of properties, but because it is an economical option with an established history of acceptable durability. Getting new products onto the market is challenging because there is no room for dramatic improvements, and one must balance the initial cost and performance with the unknowns of long-term service life. Recently, there has been renewed interest in using alternative encapsulant materials with some significant manufacturers switching from EVA to polyolefin elastomer-based (POE) alternatives.
The material typically used for this application is Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate (EVA). It had made such a name for itself in the market that it was synonymous with encapsulation, enjoying a monopoly for over three decades. Polyolefin (POE), however, is evolving strongly as an alternative, especially with the growing popularity of bifacial technology. Though bifacial is growing at a faster pace, monofacial market is still larger, meaning EVA still dominates this sector.
In this report, we categorize encapsulation materials into two segments – EVA (including transparent EVA and white EVA) and POE (including POE and EPE).
Market Drivers
Module technology drift. The mainstream switch to bifacial n-type architectures raises durability demands (PID, UV-cut, moisture barrier) that conventional EVA cannot meet alone, accelerating migration to POE and EPE2025-05-19_Encapsulant ….
Policy & localisation. Trade barriers (AD/CVD in the U.S., CBAM in the EU) propel module makers to duplicate capacity outside China, pulling encapsulant supply chains to Malaysia, the U.S. Southeast and Eastern Europe.
Sustainability push. Developer tenders increasingly specify low-VOC, recyclable or fluorine-free laminate stacks, favouring thermoplastic POE and future TPO formulations.
Challenges & Risks
Feed-stock volatility. POE dependency on a handful of metallocene lines exposes the industry to force-majeure risk; price spikes >US $3 kg have occurred during unplanned outages, erasing converter margins.
Qualification inertia. Module OEMs still require 3-5 months of BOM re-qualification; this rigid process delays the uptake of next-generation encapsulants and dampens suppliers’ ability to pass through cost swings.
Quality variability. Rapid capacity adds in China led to inconsistent gel-content and cross-linking profiles in some 2023 EVA lots, causing delamination field failures and triggering tighter incoming-QC at tier-1 OEMs.
Economic slowdown. Any pause in global PV installations—e.g., caused by grid connection bottlenecks—would immediately translate into film oversupply given >16 billion m² y nameplate capacity by 2026.
Technology Outlook
Co-extruded EPE & gradient films will become the volume mainstream by 2028, marrying EVA adhesion with POE moisture resistance at minimal cost increment.
Thermoplastic POE/TPO laminates could reduce cycle times below 6 min and enable solvent-free recycling, but bankability will hinge on ≥5-year field data.
Functionalised encapsulants (UV-down-conversion, PID-blocking layers, high-reflectance white films) will differentiate suppliers as module efficiency gains per cell approach physical limits.
Automation & digital QC (inline IR-thermal and optical coherence tomography) will be adopted to curb latent defects and support 100 % traceability demanded by EU/US traceability regulations.
