Scope of the Report
The global VGO Hydrotreating Catalysts market size is predicted to grow from US$ 401 million in 2025 to US$ 528 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 4.0% from 2026 to 2032.
VGO Hydrotreating Catalysts are refining catalysts used in the hydrotreating of heavy fractions such as vacuum gas oil (VGO), coker gas oil, and deasphalted oil. Operating under conditions of high temperature, high pressure, and hydrogen presence, they primarily remove sulfur, nitrogen, metals, and certain coke precursors, while partially saturating aromatics, thereby improving the feedstock quality for downstream catalytic cracking or hydrocracking units. Key upstream raw materials include alumina supports, pseudoboehmite, ammonium molybdate, molybdenum oxide, nickel/cobalt/tungsten salts, extrusion aids, binders, pore structure modifiers, and shaping additives. The alumina support determines properties such as specific surface area, pore volume, pore size distribution, and mechanical strength, serving as the foundation that influences the diffusion of heavy VGO molecules and metal deposition capacity. Active metal systems—such as Ni-Mo, Co-Mo, and Ni-W—determine performance regarding desulfurization, denitrogenation, aromatic saturation, and hydrogen consumption; meanwhile, additives and pore structure designs are employed to balance activity, stability, and resistance to coking and metal contamination. Midstream activities encompass catalyst formulation design, impregnation, extrusion molding, drying, calcination, activation, and loading/grading design. Downstream applications primarily serve VGO hydrotreating, FCC feedstock pretreatment, and hydrocracking pretreatment units at oil refineries.
In 2025, global sales volume is approximately 27,500 metric tons, with a prevailing ex-factory price of around $14.9/kg; major manufacturers in the industry report gross margins of approximately 30%–50%.
Global key VGO Hydrotreating Catalysts players cover W. R. Grace (ART Hydroprocessing), Ketjen, Shell Catalysts & Technologies, Topsoe, Axens, etc.
