Scope of the Report

The global Catalyst Recycling market size is predicted to grow from US$ 6,524 million in 2025 to US$ 8,983 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 4.7% from 2026 to 2032.

Catalyst recycling is a resource recovery service for automotive exhaust catalysts, spent refinery and petrochemical catalysts, precious metal catalysts used in fine chemicals and pharmaceuticals, fuel cell catalysts, and related production residues. Its core task is to recover valuable metals such as platinum, palladium, rhodium, ruthenium, iridium, rhenium, molybdenum, vanadium, nickel, cobalt, gold, and silver after catalyst deactivation, plant catalyst replacement, vehicle end of life, or the generation of metal-containing residues during production. This is achieved through collection, dismantling, sampling, assaying, roasting, pyrometallurgical smelting, hydrometallurgical leaching, chemical separation, refining, and metal account settlement, after which the recovered metals are returned to customers, sold to downstream users, or reused in the production of new catalysts and precious metal compounds. The industry mainly addresses issues such as scarce precious metal resources, the hazardous waste attributes of spent catalysts, high shutdown and catalyst replacement costs for refineries and chemical plants, long metal settlement cycles, opaque assay-based pricing, complex cross-border transportation compliance, and the increasing dependence of new catalyst supply chains on recycled metals. Typical technology routes include decanning and grinding of automotive honeycomb catalysts, thermal treatment and metal recovery of refinery catalysts, dissolution or ashing of chemical catalyst supports, high-temperature concentration of platinum group metals, chloride-based hydrometallurgical separation, plasma smelting, and closed-loop refining and return.

The industrial value of catalyst recycling comes from the dual attributes of high-value metal recovery and compliant hazardous waste treatment. Although automotive exhaust catalysts, refinery spent catalysts, petrochemical catalysts, and fine chemical catalysts lose activity after use, they still contain valuable elements such as platinum, palladium, rhodium, ruthenium, iridium, rhenium, molybdenum, vanadium, nickel, and cobalt. Platinum group metal resources are highly concentrated geographically, primary mine supply has limited elasticity, and automotive, chemical, pharmaceutical, hydrogen, and electronic materials industries continue to consume high-purity metals and metal compounds. As a result, spent catalysts have become an important secondary resource for securing critical metal supply. When customers select recycling service providers, they usually consider metal recovery rate, settlement transparency, processing cycle, hazardous waste qualification, carbon footprint reduction, and closed-loop return capability. In 2026, platinum, ruthenium, and iridium are expected to remain in deficit, while strong PGM prices continue to support the recovery of autocatalyst recycling.

From the perspective of application structure, automotive catalyst recycling remains a highly standardized and active segment, because end-of-life vehicles and repair dismantling channels provide stable feedstock sources, while ceramic honeycombs, metallic honeycombs, complete catalytic converters, and milled materials can be classified, sampled, assayed, and priced more systematically. Recycling of refinery and petrochemical spent catalysts is more project-based and industrial-service-oriented. Catalyst changeout during plant turnarounds, unloading and loading, thermal treatment, metal recovery, and residual treatment must often be coordinated with refinery operating schedules, which raises requirements for safety, logistics, and compliance capabilities. Recycling of fine chemical, pharmaceutical, and agrochemical catalysts usually involves smaller volumes but higher unit metal value, so customers place greater emphasis on metal ownership, assay credibility, and closed-loop metal return. Public segmentation materials also commonly classify spent catalyst recycling by material, application, and recycling process, with oil and gas, chemical, automotive, hydrometallurgical, and pyrometallurgical routes forming core research categories.

Regionally, Europe, the United States, and Japan remain important centers for catalyst recycling technology and precious metal refining systems, with strong accumulated capabilities in platinum group metal recovery, pyrometallurgy, hydrometallurgical separation, sampling and assaying, metal account management, and global logistics. China has a large vehicle parc, substantial petrochemical capacity, and significant precious metal consumption, while its natural platinum group metal resources are limited. This creates sustained demand for local recycling capacity and circular economy systems. Japan has built a specialized platinum group metal recycling system represented by automotive and petrochemical spent catalyst recycling, while South Korea has developed a clear PGM recovery base supported by its automotive and petrochemical industries. Future growth will mainly come from end-of-life automotive catalysts, standardized treatment by refinery and petrochemical companies, closed-loop precious metal return in fine chemicals, and rising demand for hydrogen catalyst material recycling. Overall, the long-term outlook for catalyst recycling remains positive.
