Scope of the Report

In 2025, global Praseodymium-142 production was approximately 138,000 mCi, with an average global market price of around $36 per mCi. That year, total global production capacity for Praseodymium-142 reached approximately 230,000 mCi, and the industry's average gross profit margin stood at about 34%. Praseodymium-142 (Pr-142) is an artificial radioisotope of the element praseodymium, characterized by an atomic number of 59 and a mass number of 142 (comprising 59 protons and 83 neutrons). Since praseodymium found in nature consists almost entirely of the stable isotope Pr-141, Pr-142 is primarily produced through artificial nuclear reactions. Its ground-state half-life is approximately 19.12 hours; it decays predominantly (about 99.98%) via beta-minus (β⁻) decay into stable neodymium-142 (Nd-142), with a very small fraction decaying via electron capture into cerium-142 (Ce-142). Pr-142 must be distinguished from its metastable isomer, Pr-142m, which has a half-life of approximately 14.6 minutes.

Upstream operations primarily involve the provision of high-purity Pr-141 targets, research reactors or neutron sources, target encapsulation materials, and equipment for radiation protection and dose monitoring. Because natural praseodymium is essentially composed of Pr-141, production generally does not require costly isotope enrichment; irradiation targets can be prepared using high-purity praseodymium metal, praseodymium oxide, or praseodymium salts, and Pr-142 is subsequently generated via the neutron capture reaction ¹⁴¹Pr(n,γ)¹⁴²Pr. Upstream supply capacity is largely determined by factors such as the research reactor's neutron flux, available irradiation positions, target purity, nuclear reaction cross-sections, and irradiation licensing. Midstream operations encompass target irradiation, cooling and transport, target dissolution, radiochemical purification, activity measurement, nuclide identification, dispensing, and short-distance distribution. As Pr-142 produced via neutron capture is chemically identical to Pr-141, the two cannot be separated by conventional chemical methods; consequently, the product is typically classified as "carrier-added" radioactive praseodymium rather than carrier-free Pr-142. Midstream facilities must strictly control impurities such as cerium, neodymium, and other activation products, while utilizing equipment such as high-purity germanium (HPGe) gamma spectrometers to verify nuclide purity and activity. Given that the half-life of praseodymium-142 is only about 19 hours, its production, testing, and experimental use must be tightly coordinated—typically involving on-site activation or production near a research reactor—making it unsuitable for long-term stockpiling or routine cross-border transport. Downstream applications currently focus primarily on scientific research and analytical testing, including neutron activation analysis, trace determination of praseodymium, measurement of nuclear reaction cross-sections, studies on beta decay and nuclear structure, radiochemical separation process tracing, and radiation detector experiments. In neutron activation analysis, the praseodymium content of a sample can be determined by irradiating the sample's praseodymium-141 to produce praseodymium-142 and subsequently measuring the resulting characteristic radiation signal.

The Pr-142 sector is primarily driven by demands in neutron activation analysis and fundamental nuclear science research. Natural praseodymium consists almost entirely of the stable isotope Pr-141; consequently, Pr-142 can be produced directly via the ¹⁴¹Pr(n,γ)¹⁴²Pr reaction. This process generally eliminates the need for isotopically enriched targets, offering advantages such as a stable target supply and a well-defined nuclear reaction pathway. The beta radiation and accompanying gamma signals emitted by Pr-142 are utilized in trace element analysis, nuclear reaction cross-section measurements, nuclear structure research, radiochemical process tracing, and detector performance studies. The ongoing operation of global research reactors, neutron activation analysis laboratories, and nuclear data research programs forms the most stable foundation for current demand.

Nuclear medicine and localized radiotherapy research represent significant potential growth areas for Pr-142. With a half-life of approximately 19.12 hours, Pr-142 decays primarily via beta-minus (β⁻) emission. It produces high-energy beta radiation alongside gamma rays suitable for activity measurement and in vivo distribution monitoring, making it a candidate for applications such as brachytherapy, radioactive microspheres, nanocarriers, and targeted radionuclide therapy. However, Pr-142 produced via neutron activation of Pr-141 is typically a "carrier-added" product, which limits its specific activity; additionally, the high-energy gamma emissions necessitate more stringent shielding and radiation protection measures.

Advancements in production technology will drive the evolution of Pr-142 supply from in-house laboratory production toward standardized, automated, and regionalized models. Technologies such as high-flux research reactors, automated target transfer systems, hot cells, remote dispensing equipment, and rapid activity measurement techniques can shorten the interval between target irradiation and product delivery while reducing radiation exposure for personnel.
