Scope of the Report

The global Coal Bed Methane (CBM) market size is predicted to grow from US$ 21,112 million in 2025 to US$ 29,621 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% from 2026 to 2032.

Coalbed methane (CBM) is an unconventional natural gas resource composed primarily of methane adsorbed onto the surface of coal seams and stored within the pores and fractures of the coal matrix. Extraction is typically achieved by drilling into the coal seam and draining water to reduce pressure, allowing the methane to desorb from the coal matrix and flow to the surface. The gas is then utilized for gathering, processing, pipeline transport, power generation, industrial fuel, and urban gas supply, or for the production of compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG). In 2025, global CBM production reached approximately 88 billion cubic meters.

The Coal Bed Methane market is mainly driven by the need to expand domestic natural gas supply from unconventional resources. Countries with large coal-bearing basins, such as Australia, China, India, the United States and Canada, can use CBM to diversify gas supply, reduce dependence on imported LNG or pipeline gas, and improve regional energy security. Australia has already built a mature coal seam gas-to-LNG model in Queensland, while China and India continue to promote CBM development to increase domestic gas production and reduce the energy intensity and environmental impact of coal-heavy energy systems.

A second major driver is methane emission control and coal mine safety. Methane released from coal seams and coal mines is a strong greenhouse gas and a major underground safety hazard. Capturing and utilizing CBM or coal mine methane can reduce explosion risks, lower methane emissions, and turn a hazardous gas into a commercial fuel. Policy tightening around methane emissions, especially in large coal-producing countries, is increasing the economic and regulatory incentive for methane drainage, gas collection, field processing, and utilization infrastructure.

The market is also supported by drilling, completion and production optimization technologies. Horizontal drilling, multi-branch wells, improved reservoir stimulation, better dewatering management, real-time production monitoring, gas gathering compression, and integrated CBM-to-power or CBM-to-LNG systems are improving recovery efficiency and project economics. However, CBM development remains technically sensitive because coal permeability, water production, reservoir pressure, gas content and well spacing vary greatly by basin. Operators with mature reservoir management capability and integrated downstream gas sales channels are therefore better positioned to scale production.
