개요
Scope of the Report
The global Oil-Based Automotive Interior and Exterior Coatings market size is predicted to grow from US$ 12,900 million in 2025 to US$ 15,060 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 2.3% from 2026 to 2032.
In 2024, global Oil-Based Automotive Interior and Exterior Coatings production reached approximately 2.26 million tons, with an average global market price of around US$ 5,700 ton.
Oil-based automotive interior and exterior coatings refer to coating systems that use organic solvents as the main dispersion medium and solvent-based resins as the film-forming substance, specifically designed for the decoration and protection of automotive interior and exterior plastic parts, as well as some metal parts. These coatings typically use solvent-based acrylic, polyurethane, nitrocellulose, and amino drying resins as the main film-forming agents, combined with pigments and fillers such as titanium dioxide, carbon black, aluminum silver paste, and pearlescent pigments, as well as additives such as leveling agents, defoamers, curing agents, and plasticizers. Organic solvents such as aromatic hydrocarbons, aliphatic hydrocarbons, esters, and ketones are used to adjust viscosity and application properties. Application methods include spraying, electrostatic spraying, and dip coating. Under baking or room temperature curing conditions, a coating film with strong adhesion, scratch resistance, chemical resistance, and weather resistance is formed. These coatings are widely used for the surface coating of interior plastic parts such as dashboards, door panels, center consoles, trim strips, steering wheel trims, and buttons and knobs, as well as components such as bumpers, rearview mirror housings, grilles, wheel covers, and exterior trim strips. Due to their mature formulations, wide application window, and strong adaptability to environmental temperature and humidity, oil-based automotive interior and exterior coatings still occupy a large market share globally. However, they also face increasing pressure from tightening regulations on VOC emissions and in-vehicle air quality, as well as the replacement pressure from water-based systems.
From an industry chain perspective, oil-based automotive interior and exterior coatings occupy the midstream segment of the chain: "basic chemical raw materials → professional coating formulations → automotive interior and exterior parts → OEM." The upstream mainly includes solvent-based resins, pigments and additives, organic solvents, and packaging and equipment suppliers. On the resin side, upstream companies provide solvent-based acrylic resins, polyurethane resins, nitrocellulose resins, amino resins, and alkyd resins, corresponding to international/regional resin suppliers such as BASF, Dow, Covestro, PPG, and Allnex. The pigment side includes companies providing titanium dioxide (such as Chemours and Tronox), carbon black and organic pigment manufacturers, as well as aluminum powder and pearlescent pigment producers (such as Merck). The additive side involves suppliers of leveling agents, dispersants, defoamers, thixotropic agents, light stabilizers, and anti-yellowing additives (such as Evonik, BYK, and Clariant). Meanwhile, the upstream solvent sector includes solvent producers of aromatic hydrocarbons, aliphatic hydrocarbons, butyl acetate, methyl ethyl ketone, etc., and related refining and chemical groups. Midstream oil-based automotive interior and exterior coating manufacturers are responsible for specific formulation design, color matching, experimental verification, and large-scale production, and provide downstream interior and exterior coating lines with process parameters, line modification, and quality control suggestions. Downstream are Tier 1 suppliers of automotive interior/exterior components and OEMs, such as interior and exterior plastic component companies (similar to Forvia/Faurecia, Magna, Plastic Omnium, Yanfeng, and Huaxiang), as well as passenger and commercial vehicle OEMs like Volkswagen, Toyota, GM, Ford, Stellantis, SAIC, Great Wall, and BYD. They use oil-based or oil-water parallel systems in large quantities on injection molding, substrate pretreatment, and coating lines to provide various appearance and feel options for different vehicle classes. As OEMs increasingly tighten VOC limits and in-vehicle odor control requirements, upstream and downstream companies are collaboratively achieving a balance between cost, performance, and environmental protection by adopting high-solids, low-VOC solvent-based formulations, optimizing processes, and gradually introducing water-based systems.
The annual production capacity of a single-line Oil-Based Automotive Interior and Exterior Coatings is approximately 15k tons, with a gross profit margin of approximately 20%-30%.
From a market standpoint, solvent-based automotive interior and exterior coatings remain one of the core systems in use globally, especially in emerging markets and on existing paint lines, but their overall trajectory is characterized by “large installed base, slowing growth, and gradual share erosion by waterborne technologies.” On the positive side, solventborne systems are highly mature, with formulations and production lines validated over many years, robust tolerance to varying temperature and humidity, and relatively low upfront investment—making them the default choice for cost-sensitive vehicle programs and regions. On the other hand, increasingly stringent VOC, cabin odor and fogging requirements from OEMs in Europe, North America, Japan and parts of China are driving new and retrofitted lines toward waterborne or high-solids chemistries, placing long-term downward pressure on the market share of solvent-based interior and exterior coatings. In the near term, under a global automotive backdrop of moderate production fluctuations and the coexistence of ICE and NEV platforms, the total market for solvent-based interior and exterior coatings is expected to remain a sizable, relatively stable profit pool with modest growth, while structurally shifting toward higher-solids, lower-VOC products and partial waterborne adoption on critical process steps. For coating manufacturers, solventborne systems will likely continue to provide a significant portion of revenue and cash flow in the coming years, but they must in parallel build up waterborne and hybrid portfolios, upgrade formulations to reduce VOC per unit of coating, and leverage their experience in color control, appearance and haptics to transition OEM customers smoothly toward more environmentally friendly solutions.
