Scope of the Report
The global Hydrotalcite market size is predicted to grow from US$ 247 million in 2025 to US$ 349 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.4% from 2026 to 2032.
Hydrotalcites (CAS 11097-59-9), is a Layered Double Hydroxide whose name is derived from its resemblance with talc and its high water content. Layered double hydroxides (LDH) comprise an unusual class of layered materials with positively charged hydroxide layers and charge balancing, mobile anions located in the interlayer region. This structure gives these material anion-exchange properties. The natural form of hydrotalcite is mined in small quantities in the Snarum area of Norway and the Ural area of Russia. Carl Christian Hochstetter (1842) was the first to report about hydrotalcite, which was attached firmly to a schist. He described a white material with a pearl like luster, with the formula Mg6Al2(OH)16CO3. 4H2O.
Hydrotalcites are mainly used in PVC and CPVC, and Polyolefins.
Polyolefins are utilized in a wide range of applications, including packaging, cable insulation, clothing, and medical products. However, before polyolefin materials from the reactor can be used for their intended purpose, they must undergo several processing steps.
Renowned for their pivotal role and performance as co-stabilizers in PVC and CPVC, Hydrotalcites play a crucial role in capturing the chlorine released during the thermal degradation process, thus significantly enhancing heat stability. Their exceptional purity and anion exchange mechanism make them highly effective acid scavengers, solidifying their status as unparalleled PVC and CPVC stabilizers.
Hydrotalcite, in industrial terms, is commonly used to describe the archetypal family of layered double hydroxides (LDHs): positively charged brucite-like hydroxide layers (often Mg–Al based) separated by interlayer anions (most typically CO3²⁻) and water. A widely cited “ideal” composition is Mg6Al2(CO3)(OH)16·4H2O (or equivalent notation), and its commercial value stems from its strong anion-exchange/anion-adsorption functionality, making hydrotalcite a practical inorganic anion exchanger.
On the application side, one of the largest value pools remains polymer additives (stabilization / acid scavenging). In PVC, LDH is typically used as a co-stabilizer/acid scavenger—capturing chloride/acidic species through anion exchange and suppressing the self-accelerating degradation pathway; major additive suppliers explicitly position hydrotalcites as enabling heavy-metal-free PVC stabilization, particularly in conjunction with Ca/Zn systems. Beyond PVC, synthetic hydrotalcite products (e.g., DHT series) are used as halogen/acid scavengers across polyolefins, rubbers, and other polymer systems, and are also promoted in film-related applications such as agricultural films. Outside polymers, the tunable LDH layered structure and interlayer chemistry underpin expanding adoption in water purification/membrane separations and flame-retardant polymer composites (as barrier/char-promoting/heat-absorbing components), with substantial review literature supporting both performance mechanisms and practical formulations.
In 2025, the top three suppliers account for ~64.5%, and the top five reach ~76.0%, implying that competitive advantage increasingly depends on grade portfolio depth, formulation co-development, batch-to-batch consistency, and global service capability rather than basic supply alone. A key structural demand driver is the continued shift toward more sustainable PVC stabilization: European PVC programs document the phase-out/replacement of lead stabilizers by 2015, accelerating penetration of alternative stabilizer architectures where hydrotalcite functions as a “standard acid-scavenging module.” Forward trends are dominated by (i) engineered LDH (tighter PSD/moisture/impurity control and surface engineering to reduce processing defects), (ii) harsh-condition specialty grades (including calcined high-thermal-stability products and perchlorate-incorporated hydrotalcite for PVC in contact with PU), (iii) continued growth in non-PVC application pull (water and flame retardancy), and (iv) rising compliance/documentation expectations that favor suppliers with robust QA and change-control discipline.
