Scope of the Report

The global Civilian Nitrocellulose market size is predicted to grow from US$ 803 million in 2025 to US$ 1,103 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 4.7% from 2026 to 2032.

Nitrocellulose, also known as nitrocellulose, cellulose nitrate, and cotton-based collodion, has applications in two main categories: civilian and military. In civilian applications, it can be used in paints, coatings, inks, filters, and various membranes. With the push towards sulfur-free, smokeless, or low-smoke environmentally friendly fireworks propellants, civilian nitrocellulose is expected to be used in environmentally friendly fireworks, opening up a huge new market. Statistically, civilian nitrocellulose only covers the commercial and industrial market and does not include applications in military weaponry, wartime ammunition, military propellants, or other military conflict-related uses. In 2025, global civilian nitrocellulose production was approximately 175,100 tons, with an average price of $4685.71/ton and a gross profit margin of 31.24%. The average production line capacity was 30,000 tons/year. Upstream raw materials included cotton linters, refined cotton, alcohol, nitric acid, sulfuric acid, and packaging materials. Downstream companies included AkzoNobel, Sherwin-Williams, Sun Chemical, Hubergroup and Bayer AG. China accounted for approximately 70% of global nitrocellulose production.

Recent Production News: On the evening of January 16, 2026, Beihua Shares (002246) announced a planned investment of 296 million yuan to build a new 10,000-ton/year nitrocellulose production line in Nanchong City, Sichuan Province, with a construction period of 24 months.

Downstream Applications: In the coatings industry, demand for oil-based coatings, represented by nitrocellulose lacquer, remained relatively stable. In the ink industry, the high-end color printing market maintained growth in recent years, with the main demand being for high-quality products that are low-nitrogen, low-viscosity, high-quality, and have good flowability. There are currently 431 fireworks and firecracker production enterprises in Liuyang. In 2024, the fireworks industry achieved a total output value of 50.22 billion yuan, accounting for about 60% of the domestic market share and about 70% of the national exports. There is huge market potential for nitrocellulose to replace black powder in fireworks.
