Scope of the Report
The global Lithium-ion Battery Backup Unit Module market size is predicted to grow from US$ 973 million in 2025 to US$ 1,999 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 10.6% from 2026 to 2032.
Global sales of lithium-ion Battery Backup Unit (BBU) modules are projected to reach 2.685 million units in 2025, with an average price of $352 per unit.
A lithium-ion Battery Backup Unit (BBU) module is a short-term backup power supply module that utilizes lithium-ion cells as its core energy storage component and integrates a Battery Management System (BMS), protection circuitry, connection interfaces, and necessary structural components. In the event of a momentary power outage, voltage sag, or power source switchover affecting servers, power shelves, or data center main power supplies, the BBU module responds within milliseconds to provide continuous DC output. It offers short-term power support for servers, AI/GPU racks, storage devices, and network equipment until main power is restored or a downstream backup power source takes over. Common battery chemistries include Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) and ternary lithium (NCM/NCA). These modules feature high power density, rapid charge/discharge capabilities, long cycle life, and modular deployment, making them ideal for high-reliability power supply scenarios such as AI servers, data centers, cloud computing, telecommunications, and edge computing.
The upstream raw materials for BBU lithium batteries are largely the same as those for standard cylindrical lithium batteries. Key materials include cathode materials (ternary precursors or LFP), anode materials (artificial graphite), electrolytes (solvents and lithium salts), separators (base film with ceramic or boehmite coatings), copper/aluminum foil current collectors, and steel casings with top cap assemblies. However, because BBU cells require high-rate discharge (≥10C) and a cycle life exceeding 10 years, they impose stricter requirements on raw material purity, consistency, and formulation design. Cathode materials must be high-voltage, highly stable ternary systems or long-cycle-life LFP systems; anodes require high-rate artificial graphite or silicon-carbon composites; electrolytes must be compatible with high-voltage windows and incorporate special functional additives; and "full-tab" designs necessitate the use of specific tab welding materials and specialized structural components. Regarding cost structure, BBU lithium batteries are characterized by the absolute dominance of raw material costs, followed by manufacturing expenses and significant certification premiums. Taking cylindrical lithium batteries used in BBUs as a reference, raw materials account for approximately 75% of the total cost, with cathode materials representing the single largest expenditure; manufacturing costs account for about 15% (including equipment depreciation, energy consumption, and yield losses); and labor costs account for roughly 8%. From the perspective of the complete BBU module, the battery pack constitutes about 60% of the Bill of Materials (BOM), while charge/discharge and circuit control components account for approximately 20%, voltage converters for 15%, and structural components for 5%. Since BBU battery cells represent only 0.1%–0.2% of the total cost of an AI server rack, downstream customers are relatively insensitive to price but place extremely high demands on safety certifications (such as UL, IEC, and UN38.3) and long-term reliability; consequently, certification barriers and quality premiums constitute significant components of "hidden costs." Current industry trends show a shift in cell chemistry from ternary lithium (NCM/NCA) to lithium iron phosphate (LFP) to enhance safety, alongside an upgrade in cell form factor from the traditional 18650 to the full-tab 21700 to achieve higher power density (150–200W) and lower internal resistance.
