Scope of the Report

The global Trifluralin market size is predicted to grow from US$ 213 million in 2025 to US$ 265 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 3.1% from 2026 to 2032.

In 2025, global trifluralin production reached approximately 51.8 kilotons, the average price is 4000 usd/ton. Trifluralin is a yellow-orange crystalline solid. Denser than water and not soluble in water. Hence sinks in water. Melting point 48.5-49°C. Used as a selective pre-emergence herbicide.

Trifluralin is a dinitroaniline-class selective pre-emergence herbicide primarily used to control annual grass weeds and certain broadleaf weeds. Its primary mode of action involves inhibiting plant tubulin polymerization and interfering with mitosis as well as root and shoot growth, thereby preventing weed seed germination and seedling development.

Chemically known as α,α,α-trifluoro-2,6-dinitro-N,N-dipropyl-p-toluidine (molecular formula C₁₃H₁₆F₃N₃O₄), trifluralin is a selective soil-applied herbicide. Due to its strong soil adsorption and long residual activity, it is typically applied to the soil either before sowing or after sowing but prior to crop emergence; soil incorporation is employed to distribute the herbicide evenly within the tillage layer, thereby enhancing weed control efficacy and minimizing losses due to photolysis.

Market Concentration and Major Players:

Internationally, the market concentration of trifluralin is relatively high, mainly concentrated in developed countries such as Europe and the United States. Large manufacturers include ADAMA and Corteva. Domestically, trifluralin still has significant room for development.

Manufacturing Process and Market Trends:

The manufacturing process of trifluralin starts with toluene, followed by chlorination and fluorination to obtain p-chlorotrifluorotoluene. This is then dinitrated with mixed acid to produce 3,5-dinitro-4-chlorotrifluorotoluene, which is then amination with di-n-propylamine at 85-90°C under alkaline catalysis, followed by recrystallization from ethanol to obtain the technical grade. The key is controlling N-nitrosodipropylamine residue and waste. Micro-reaction continuous flow positive displacement reactors are used to improve amination safety and yield compared to batch reactors.

The global market is driven by pre-emergence weed management and resistance rotation in soybeans and cotton. The US Cotton Belt and the Midwest, as well as rice and cotton fields in China and India, are the main consumption areas. In Europe, due to concerns about nitrosamines and groundwater from dinitroaniline, the use of herbicides has declined due to stricter regulations. Latin America, the Middle East and Africa have followed suit with expanded planting to ensure food security. The formulation has shifted from emulsifiable concentrates to granules and microcapsules to reduce volatility and drift. Precision spraying and GPS-guided spraying have increased the unit efficacy. Leading companies such as Adama and Nufarm hold the power in terms of active ingredients and compound formulations. The Asia-Pacific region has concentrated active ingredient production capacity, but high-end formulations and regulatory files still rely on Europe and the United States. Overall, the market is being redefined from bulk pre-emergence herbicides to low-residue compound formulations and resistance management programs.
