Scope of the Report

The global Water for Injection (WFI) System market size is predicted to grow from US$ 191 million in 2025 to US$ 248 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 4.1% from 2026 to 2032.

Water for Injection (WFI) System is a critical component in pharmaceutical and biotech manufacturing that produces high-quality purified water that meets the stringent standards required for injectable drugs, sterile formulations, and other critical applications in the industry. WFI systems typically include processes such as reverse osmosis, distillation, and filtration to remove impurities and microorganisms, ensuring water purity and quality. This purified water is a key ingredient in drug formulations and is used for cleaning, sterilization, and a variety of other pharmaceutical processes.

In 2025, global sales of Water for Injection (WFI) System reached approximately 1,157 units, with an average global market price of around US$ 169 K/unit. Production capacity varies significantly among manufacturers, with gross profit margins ranging from approximately 20% to 40%.

Water for Injection (WFI) System is a critical utility equipment category used in pharmaceutical and biotechnology manufacturing. It is designed to produce, store, distribute and control Water for Injection, a high-purity pharmaceutical water grade defined by major pharmacopeias, including the United States Pharmacopeia, European Pharmacopoeia, Japanese Pharmacopoeia and Chinese Pharmacopoeia. Typical Water for Injection System includes multi-effect distillers, vapor compression distillers, membrane-based WFI generation equipment, pure steam generators, WFI storage tanks, sanitary distribution loops, heat exchangers, pumps, valves, instrumentation and automation control systems.

Water for Injection is used in the pharmaceutical industry for the formulation of parenteral drugs, sterile preparations, biologics and other high-risk products. It is also used in equipment cleaning, final rinsing, clean utility supply and other manufacturing operations where strict control of microbial contamination and bacterial endotoxins is required. Because WFI may come into direct or indirect contact with final drug products, Water for Injection System must be designed, fabricated and validated to meet stringent GMP, pharmacopeial and hygienic engineering requirements.

Traditionally, Water for Injection was produced mainly by distillation, including multi-effect distillation and vapor compression distillation. In the United States and Japan, non-distillation methods such as reverse osmosis have long been accepted, provided that the required WFI quality can be consistently achieved. In Europe, the European Pharmacopoeia revised its WFI monograph in 2017, allowing WFI to be produced by reverse osmosis combined with appropriate additional technologies such as electro-deionization, ultrafiltration or nanofiltration. China has also updated its regulatory position. Under the 2025 edition of the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, WFI may be obtained from purified water by distillation or by a purification process equivalent to distillation, provided that the process complies with the relevant regulatory requirements and the final water quality meets the applicable specifications. As a result, the market for Water for Injection System is no longer limited to conventional thermal equipment. Membrane-based WFI generation equipment has become an increasingly important technology route, especially for projects focused on energy saving, lower carbon emissions, reduced utility consumption and modular construction. However, membrane-based WFI equipment must still demonstrate robust microbial control, endotoxin control, membrane integrity, sanitization capability, online monitoring and lifecycle validation. For conservative sterile manufacturing projects, distillation-based equipment remains a mature and widely accepted solution, while membrane-based WFI equipment is increasingly adopted where the regulatory strategy, product risk profile and quality system can support its use.
