Plutonium-242 (Pu-242) is a radioactive element and isotope of plutonium with a half-life of 373,000 years. Currently, all plutonium-242 available on the market is artificially produced. Most plutonium-242 is used as fuel for nuclear reactors, but some is also used as a tracer for detecting environmental pollution.
Upstream raw materials and production rely on the existing nuclear fuel cycle. The raw materials are irradiated nuclear fuel (including other plutonium isotopes) from nuclear reactors. These are obtained in trace quantities through extremely delicate and lengthy chemical separation and purification processes in specialized nuclear reactors (such as research reactors) or large reprocessing plants. Midstream processing and purification, separating high-purity plutonium-242 from complex mixtures, presents a very high technical barrier. This step is typically closely integrated with production and is carried out by national nuclear institutions with cutting-edge technology. Downstream applications primarily include scientific research, nuclear physics research, and radioactive sources.
Plutonium-242 does not occur naturally and can only be produced artificially in nuclear reactors. Its production process is very lengthy: after absorbing a neutron in a reactor, the most common fissile material, plutonium-239, does not immediately fission. Instead, a portion of it transforms into plutonium-240. Pu-240 then absorbs further neutrons, transforming into plutonium-241. Pu-241 then absorbs another neutron, finally yielding plutonium-242. This process requires multiple neutron captures, so significant concentrations of plutonium-242 accumulate only in high-burnup nuclear fuel (i.e., fuel irradiated for extended periods in a reactor).
The unique value of plutonium-242 stems primarily from its extremely long half-life and low neutron absorption cross-section.
The main applications of plutonium 242 are as follows.
1. Target material for the production of superplutonium elements (such as californium-252) is its most important and primary application. Plutonium-242 continuously captures multiple neutrons, ultimately producing heavier transuranic elements such as curium-244 and californium-252 through a series of beta decays.
2. Heat source material (radioisotope heat source). Due to its long half-life and the heat released by alpha decay, plutonium-242 was once considered for use in radioisotope thermoelectric generators. After alpha particles are intercepted by the material itself, their kinetic energy is converted into heat, which can be directly generated through thermocouples to generate electricity. This can provide long-term power for deep space probes, unmanned remote ground stations, and other applications.
3. Nuclear physics and chemistry research
Due to its stability and relatively low radioactivity, plutonium-242 is an ideal model for studying the chemical and physical properties of plutonium. It can be used to study alpha decay processes and the behavior of heavy elements.
