Network operators were among the first in Europe to trial services based on 5G. Recent spectrum auctions raised €6.55 billion, a cost which has encouraged operators to look at cost-saving options including network build cooperation and the sale of base station portfolios. The high cost also encouraged the regulator in early 2021 to consider extending the licenses by an additional six years.

Fastweb S.p.A. (A Swisscom Company) has secured spectrum in the 3.5GHz and 26GHz bands and has a ten-year deal with Wind Tre providing it with national roaming as well as a partner with which to develop a 5G network. By 2024 FastWeb is looking to deliver 5G mmWave broadband to 12 million householders (nearly covers 45% of Italy's population) with speeds of up to 1 Gbps.

CNT selects Nokia to modernise existing LTE infrastructure

Nokia has announced its cooperation with Ecuadorian mobile operator, Corporación Nacional de Telecommunicaciones (CNT) to introduce the first 5G network to the country. The nature of cooperation includes Nokia's support to CNT with the extensive network modernization of existing LTE infrastructure as well as the installation of a 5G **non standalone (NSA) network.

Deutsche Telekom’s 5G service provided about 80% population coverage by March 2021. The company has installed over 50,000 5G antennas, transmitting with 5G across Germany. German operator expects its 5G network to reach 90% of the country’s population.

ACMA concludes auction of 26GHz spectrum for 5G

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has concluded its auction of 2.4 GHz of spectrum in the 26 GHz (24.25–27.5 GHz) band (The 26 GHz band will provide extremely fast and high capacity 5G broadband services to Australia). The 26 GHz auction is the first-time millimeter wave spectrum suitable for 5G services has been made available for spectrum licensing in Australia. Telstra, Optus, Mobile JV (for TPG Telecom), Dense Air, and Pentanet were all successful in securing 15 spectrum licenses worth a total value of $647.64 million.
