نظرة عامة

Scope of the Report

The global Arc Fault Detection Devices (AFDD) market size is predicted to grow from US$ 1,992 million in 2025 to US$ 3,392 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 7.9% from 2026 to 2032.

AFDDs are protective devices installed in consumer units to provide protection from arc faults. They use microprocessor technology to analyse the waveform of the electricity being used to detect any unusual signatures which would signify an arc on the circuit. This will cut off power to the affected circuit and could prevent a fire. They are far more sensitive to arcs than conventional circuit protective devices.Like a Residual Current Circuit Breaker (RCCB) or Residual Current Breaker with Overcurrent protection (RCBO), AFDDs usually incorporate a test button which can be operated by the end-user to prove the mechanical operation of the device。In terms of physical size, at present AFDDs are typically twice the size of a circuit-breaker and will require a larger consumer unit to accommodate. It is unlikely that AFDDs can be installed in an existing consumer unit due to spare physical space and the existing busbar connection arrangement, AFDDs require a busbar with live and neutral connections.

Upstream includes MCU/ASIC + signal acquisition (current/voltage), trip mechanism and plastics; midstream LV protection makers integrate arc-signature detection into MCB/RCBO platforms and certify to IEC/EN 62606 (or UL 1699 for North American AFCIs). Downstream demand is driven by residential/public buildings via electricians, panel builders and electrical wholesalers; UK wiring rules (18th Edition Amd.2) accelerated adoption from 28 Sep 2022 for specific premises/circuits.

As a key safety device for preventing electrical fires, the development and popularization of Arc Fault Detection Devices (AFDD) have always kept up with the demand upgrade in the field of electrical safety, and multiple core factors jointly drive the continuous progress of the industry. The rigid demand for electrical fire prevention and control is the primary driving force. With the continuous improvement of building electrification level, arc faults caused by line aging, poor contact, equipment failure and other factors have become one of the main causes of electrical fires. Traditional overload and short-circuit protection equipment is difficult to identify such hidden faults. However, AFDD can accurately capture arc signals and quickly cut off the power supply, effectively filling the gap in electrical safety protection. At the same time, the increasingly strict electrical safety standards in various countries provide important support for its market expansion. Many countries and regions have successively included AFDD in the scope of mandatory installation, covering residential buildings, commercial buildings, industrial plants and other scenarios. Policy dividends have directly driven the market demand for products. In addition, the integration of the Internet of Things and intelligent sensing technology has injected new impetus into its function upgrade. Modern AFDD has gradually got rid of the single protection function. By integrating intelligent features such as data collection, remote monitoring and fault early warning, it realizes the full-process control of electrical safety status, meeting the intelligent demand for safety protection in smart buildings and intelligent industry.

Despite the increasing application value of AFDD, their development and application still face many challenges that need to be overcome. The problem of detection accuracy in complex environments is particularly prominent. There are many factors such as non-linear loads and electromagnetic interference in actual electrical scenarios. These interferences are easy to be confused with real arc signals, leading to false alarms or missed alarms of the device. Especially in the environment of industrial high-frequency equipment operation and complex wiring, the stability of detection accuracy is difficult to guarantee. Insufficient product compatibility and adaptability also restrict its popularization. Electrical equipment of different brands and specifications have differences in voltage level and wiring mode, while the adaptation range of existing AFDD is limited. Some old lines or special types of equipment are difficult to match the corresponding protection devices, which affects the comprehensiveness of the protection system. In addition, the dual constraints of cost and awareness cannot be ignored. The R&D and manufacturing costs of high-end intelligent devices are relatively high, leading to high product prices, which limits their promotion in small and medium-sized businesses, old residential areas and other scenarios. At the same time, some users have insufficient understanding of the harmfulness of arc faults and the protection value of detection devices, and their willingness to install them actively is low, which also brings certain resistance to the development of the industry.
