Scope of the Report
The global In-display Optical Fingerprint Sensor market size is predicted to grow from US$ 743 million in 2025 to US$ 918 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 2.9% from 2026 to 2032.
An under-display optical fingerprint sensor is a biometric sensing chip or module installed beneath an OLED or optically transmissive display structure. It typically consists of an optical image sensor, microlens or collimator structure, optical filtering components, readout circuits, security algorithms and module packaging. The sensor captures a two-dimensional fingerprint image by illuminating the finger through the display and detecting reflected light from fingerprint ridges and valleys. The captured image is then processed through enhancement, feature extraction, liveness detection and secure matching. This study focuses on under-display optical fingerprint sensor chips and modules used in smartphones, tablets and selected mobile devices, with emphasis on recognition speed, accuracy, strong-light resistance, dry/wet finger performance, module thickness, power consumption, display compatibility and device integration.
Based on our research, the under-display optical fingerprint sensor industry has shifted from an early adoption story to a mature component market shaped by cost, thickness, recognition reliability and display integration. In the first commercial phase, the main value proposition was enabling biometric authentication after smartphone brands removed front-mounted physical buttons and moved toward full-screen OLED designs. In the current phase, the core competitive variables are no longer simply whether the sensor can work under the display, but whether suppliers can deliver thinner modules, faster unlock speed, stable recognition under strong ambient light, better dry/wet finger performance, lower power consumption, stronger anti-spoofing capability and smooth integration with flexible OLED display stacks. The product should therefore be understood as a system-level optical sensing solution rather than a standalone image sensor. From the supply side, the market is relatively concentrated and the number of clearly verified suppliers is limited. Goodix and Egis have the strongest current evidence as suppliers of optical in-display or under-display fingerprint solutions, while Synaptics should be treated as a historically important supplier that helped commercialize early optical in-display fingerprint sensors. Fingerprint Cards can be included as an extended core player because it has disclosed optical under-display qualification progress, but its current large-scale commercial position should be verified carefully. Silead, FocalTech and several module or optical-component companies should not be mixed directly into the core supplier list without stronger product-level evidence. This distinction is important because the broader fingerprint ecosystem includes capacitive sensor vendors, module integrators, optical component suppliers, algorithm providers and smartphone OEMs, but only a smaller subset are true under-display optical fingerprint sensor or solution suppliers. From the demand side, smartphones remain the dominant application, especially OLED-based Android devices in the mid-range, premium and selected flagship segments. The market’s growth is now less about first-time adoption and more about OLED penetration in mid-range models, Android smartphone replacement cycles, module cost reduction and user-experience improvement. Foldable phones, tablets and other mobile devices can create incremental demand, but they remain secondary compared with conventional bar-type smartphones. At the same time, the addressable market is constrained by three competing authentication routes: side-mounted capacitive fingerprint sensors in cost-sensitive or LCD-based phones, ultrasonic under-display fingerprint sensors in some high-end Android models, and face recognition or 3D sensing in selected premium devices. As a result, optical under-display fingerprint sensors are likely to remain a mainstream Android solution, but not a high-growth component category. From the technology roadmap perspective, the most important upgrade paths are ultra-thin optical modules, collimator-based optical architecture, larger recognition areas, improved signal-to-noise ratio, stronger ambient-light compensation, enhanced liveness detection and better compatibility with flexible OLED and LTPO displays. Large-area or full-screen fingerprint recognition remains attractive from a user-experience perspective, but its cost, power consumption, display-stack complexity and yield challenges limit near-term mass adoption. Meanwhile, ultrasonic fingerprint technology will continue to pressure the high-end segment by offering 3D imaging and better wet-finger performance. Optical solutions, however, still retain clear advantages in cost, supply-chain maturity, module thickness optimization and broad Android OEM adoption, especially in mainstream price bands. Overall, we estimate the global under-display optical fingerprint sensor market at approximately USD 760 million in 2025 and USD 790 million in 2026, with a 2026–2032 CAGR of around 2.8%. This outlook reflects a mature but still relevant component market rather than a fast-expanding emerging category. Future competition will likely follow a bifurcated pattern: low-cost optical solutions will defend the mainstream Android OLED market, while premium models may increasingly evaluate ultrasonic, large-area optical or multimodal biometric solutions. Supplier differentiation will depend on optical architecture, module thickness, recognition speed, anti-spoofing performance, software tuning, OLED display compatibility and the ability to co-develop solutions with smartphone OEMs and display module partners.
