The sunflower was a major export crop for Argentina till 2002 and the country was responsible for about 18% of production to the world. Argentina lost the momentum and slipped to 7% as government policies and market condition pushed farmers towards the soybean crop because of its competitiveness.

In Argentina, sunflowers are sown from north to south, as soil temperatures increase. Though Palm Oil holds the larger market share in Europe which is experiencing weak demand due to the poor standard of production, could revive the Sunflower Oil industry in Argentina in the near future.

Currently, Argentina is the leading Soybean oil exporting country with an export volume of about ~5.1 million metric tons. Amid U.S. China trade war, Argentina could be the preferred export partner for Chinese, as the country is expected to increase the soybean imports by 1.5% p.a. to about 113 Mt in 2027, accounting for about two-thirds of world soybean imports. But, since China is already a major processor, they would be more interested in soybean seed/crushed seeds imports rather than oil.

At the global level exports of soybeans originate predominately from the Americas; together, the United States, Brazil, and Argentina will account for 87% of world soybean exports in 2027.
