Automotive Aftermarket Introduction

The automotive aftermarket serves as a tributary market of the automotive industry. The aftermarket is concerned with the manufacturing, distribution, retailing, and installation of automotive components, equipment, and accessories to the consumer. OEMs may not manufacture these parts, accessories, etc. and thus provides an opportunity for other manufacturers.
Aftermarket can be divided into two broad categories:
  • Replacement parts are automotive parts built or remanufactured to replace OE parts as they become worn or damaged.
  • Accessories parts are made for comfort, convenience, safety, performance or customization, and are add-on after the original sale of the motor vehicle.

Automotive Aftermarket Scenario in Europe

The European automotive aftermarket encompasses various small subsectors including training institutes, repairers, parts manufacturers, roadside patrols, parts wholesalers, remanufacturers and tool manufacturers.

The service business (maintenance and repair of vehicles) generates about 45% of total aftermarket revenues in Europe, while retail and wholesale of vehicle parts make up the remaining around 55%.

The European automotive parts aftermarket is currently estimated at EUR 123 billion (2017 parts retail market value). Towards 2025, the European aftermarket is projected to grow at 2.4% in Western Europe and 5.0% in Eastern Europe annually, and it is expected to reach EUR 161 billion by 2025, driven by a growing European carpark and new sales, longer vehicle lifetime and, finally, new digital products and services.
