ChemChina has actually become the world's largest player in the agrochemical segment. The acquisitions of Syngenta and Adama put the company at the top of the ladder. However, buying Syngenta left the company with huge debt and only time will tell how easily ChemChina will integrate the Swiss company. 1. Syngenta AG (ChemChina)

Syngenta was formed in 2000 by the merger of Novartis Agribusiness and Zeneca Agrochemicals. In 2018 the company's sales were USD 13.5 billion, up 7 percent, 9 percent adjusted for 2017 sugar beet, and mandated crop protection antitrust divestments. Crop protection sales of USD 10.4 billion increased 7 percent in 2017. In 2017, ChemChina bought Syngenta for USD 43 billion. The deal marks the biggest overseas acquisition by a Chinese company so far. The agreement transformed the government-owned ChemChina into a number one global player in agrochemicals while incurring a massive debt burden.

2. Bayer Crop Science

Bayer's entire Crop Science business, including seed and trait and seed treatment sales, doubled (+106%) to Euro 4661 million. Bayer's annual crop protection business increased by 26.1% on a reported basis to Euro 8163 million. Reported sales of entire Crop Science division rose by 49% (+6.1%) to Euro 14266 million. The Monsanto acquisition and divestments to BASF rose by 3% to Euro 4511 million.

3. BASF SE

BASF aspires to become an integrated provider of crop protection and biotechnology products, seeds for selected field crops and vegetables, and digital farming. BASF reported an increase of 2.8% in agrochemical sales in 2018 to Euro 5856 million (USD 6654 million). The company’s Agricultural Solutions business's total annual revenues, including seed and traits, grew by 8.1% to Euro 6156 million. North America, BASF’s largest revenue region, contributes 35% of total revenues. The region's sales increased by 8.1% to Euro 2166 million.

4. Dow Agro Sciences (Corteva Agriscience™)

The Agriculture Division of DowDuPont™ is now known as Corteva Agriscience™. Corteva Agriscience™ brings together DuPont Crop Protection, DuPont Pioneer and Dow AgroSciences to create a market-shaping, standalone agriculture company with leading positions in Seed Technologies, Crop Protection, and Digital Agriculture. DowDuPont’s crop protection sales rose by 5.6% to USD 1618 million in the fourth quarter of 2018. DowDuPont’s agriculture business, Corteva Agriscience, recorded a 1.1% increase in revenues to USD 2817 million.

5. FMC (FMC Agricultural Solutions)

FMC Corporation provides solutions to growers around the world with a portfolio of proprietary crop protection products and a robust pipeline fueled by innovative discovery and development capabilities in crop protection, plant health, and professional pest and turf maintenance solutions. For the fourth quarter, FMC reported revenue of approximately USD 1.2 billion, an increase of 24 percent year-over-year, and USD 4.25 billion (excluded Lithium) revenue to FY 2018.  
 

6. Adama Ltd.

Adama Ltd. is the result of a 2017 merger between Israel-based Adama Agricultural Solutions Ltd. and Chinese pesticide producer Hubei Sanonda Co. Ltd., a subsidiary of ChemChina. ChemChina acquired a 60% stake in the Israeli crop protection company in 2014; in June 2017, the China Securities Regulatory Commission approved the acquisition of the remaining 40% of shares by ChemChina, making it the sole owner of the company through its Hubei Sandona Co. Ltd. subsidiary. Adama's revenues grew by 17.3% in the quarter to a record USD 963 million and by 10.2% in the full year to a record USD 3881 million, compared to the corresponding periods last year. In constant currency, revenues grew by 22.8% in the quarter and 12.4% in the full year.

7. Nufarm Ltd.

Nufarm is a leading crop protection and seed technologies company. The company develops, manufactures and sells a wide range of crop protection products, including herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides, that help growers protect their crops against damage caused by weeds, pests, and disease. Nufarm has established a presence in major agricultural regions throughout the world. Nufarm has crop protection formulation and manufacturing facilities in nine countries and seed-related research, development, and marketing operations in Australia, North America, Latin America, and Europe. Group revenues increased by six percent to USD 3.31 billion (2017: USD 3.11 billion), despite the overall industry recording minimal growth during the period.

8. Sumitomo Chemical Co., Ltd.

Sumitomo Chemical is one of Japan’s leading chemical companies, providing a diverse range of products globally in the fields of petrochemicals, energy and functional materials, IT-related chemicals and materials, health and Agrochemical products, and pharmaceuticals. 9. UPL Limited

UPL Limited, formerly United Phosphorus Limited, is an Indian multinational company specializing in manufacturing and marketing agrochemicals, industrial chemicals, chemical intermediates, and specialty chemicals and also offers crop protection solutions. In February 2019, UPL announced the completion of its acquisition of New York-based Arysta LifeScience Inc for USD 4.2 billion. Arysta specializes in developing, formulating, registering, marketing, and distributing differentiated crop protection chemicals for various crops and applications. The acquisition will give UPL a global reach as UPL is strong in regions such as India, the Americas, and Western Europe, and Arysta’s strength is in Africa, Russia, and Eastern Europe markets. UPL's current year revenue was INR 22,077 crore.

10. Nutrichem Company Limited

Nutrichem is an R&D-centric company based in China which specializes in the development of crop protection products. Nutrichem, a leading supplier of agrochemicals in China, purchased Dow AgroSciences’ oxyfluorfen business. Nutrichem reported 2018 annual preliminary earnings estimate. In 2018, Nutrichem's operating revenue was RMB 6.221 billion, YoY increase of 1.32%; operating profit was RMB 616 million, YoY increase of 60.73%; total profit was RMB 603 million, YoY increase of 68.16%; The net profit attributable to shareholders of the listed company was RMB445 million, YoY increase of 52.57%.
