Covid-19 Impact on Global Ventilator Market

Covid-19 Impact on Global Ventilator Market
The battle with the COVID-19 would be one-sided without ventilators, which is now very much clear from data coming from around the world. Deaths due to ventilator shortages have put question marks on the health infrastructure of countries like Italy and Spain, while on the other hand, the global superpower America is badly struggling with ventilator shortages.

This situation is similar in all the corona affected countries of the world. Medical facilities in the UK, Germany, France, and other developed countries have also been badly affected by this sudden surge in demand for ventilators. Governments across these nations have raised their demand for ventilators as doctors and hospitals prepare for a continuing surge in patients infected with the COVID-19 virus. Let us see who are the biggest names in ventilator manufacturing.

On April 15th, 2020, the number of people suffering from this deadly virus across the world was around 13,80,2013, while 126,762 have lost their life (many of them because of the unavailability of ventilators). Before this pandemic spread, 77,000 new ventilators were sufficient to meet the market demand of the entire world.  Now in this worsening situation, the New England Journal of Medicine estimated that the US alone may require 60,000 to 160,000 ventilators.

Why Ventilators are Invaluable in COVID-19 condition

The novel coronavirus, when it reaches its peak, causes severe pneumonia-like conditions in the body that affect lung functioning and the patient starts to have breathing difficulties. The lungs lose their ability to function naturally due to the congestion caused by pneumonia and they need an external support system like ventilators. Ventilators pump air and oxygen into the lungs and remove carbon dioxide which increases the patient's chance of survival.

Oxygen therapy from an oxygen mask and piped oxygen or CPAP (constant positive airway pressure) ventilator is provided patient depending on his/her oxygen saturation level. More invasive treatment with intubation and ventilation is required in very severe cases where patients may require complete sedation for a period.

Present Market Scenario

Currently, American hospitals have about 200,000 ventilators; However, the American Hospital Association (AHA) guesstimates that more than 900,000 people may need ventilators if the situation deteriorates (source: abcnews). In addition, estimation from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicates that near about millions of Americans infected with COVID-19 may require intensive care.

The British Government has entrusted the responsibility of supplying ventilators to National Health Services (NHS) due to the increasing cases. NHS is also taking the help of the army and imports to fill this gap. Near about 5000 local manufacturers have also assured to provide ventilators. According to an estimate, Britain may need about 18,000 new ventilators. Amid the possibility of Brexit, the government is facing some technical problems in the matter of import from Europe.

Our research partner GlobalData has estimated that the U.S. needs additional 75,000 ventilators to cope with demand caused by the coronavirus outbreak. France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK collectively require 74,000 devices to fight this pandemic while 880,000 more ventilators will be needed globally.

The government seeks cooperation from automakers to speed up the production. In U.S. Ford, GM, Toyota, and Tesla, which have all temporarily shut down their factories in recent weeks, have pledged to help. General Electric and Ford will produce 50,000 ventilators by July 2020 for the U.S. government under the Defense Production Act for USD 336 million.

In India top five auto manufacturers —Tata Motors Ltd, Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd (M&M), Hyundai Motor India Ltd, Honda Cars India Ltd, and Maruti Suzuki India Ltd would explore the possibility of making ventilators at their production facilities. Local manufacturers AgVa Healthcare, LifeLine Biz, Trivitron Healthcare and Air Liquid Medical Systems, and Narang Healthcare and AVI Healthcare have already started working on prototypes.
