Scope of the Report
The global Sago Starch market size is predicted to grow from US$ 405 million in 2025 to US$ 570 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.1% from 2026 to 2032.
Sago is a type of starch that's commonly extracted from a palm called Metroxylon sagu. It's mainly composed of carbs and is low in protein, fat, fiber, vitamins, and minerals. However, sago is naturally grain- and gluten-free, making it suitable for those following restricted diets. Sago starch is a multi-purpose product and therefore has a wide variety of usage from commercial to industrial purposes. For commercial purposes, sago starch can be used as the main ingredient of food products such as cookies, noodles, vermicelli, meatballs, dumplings, and other desserts. For industrial purposes, sago starch is considered to be one of the commodities which hold the highest yield in glucose extraction process compared to molasses and tapioca starch. Therefore, sago starch could be used by industries like textile, paper, food, and even medical purposes.
Global sago starch manufacturing is highly concentrated in Indonesia and Malaysia, both of which have verifiable large-scale factories. Currently, only branded packaging/reprocessing operations exist in China, with no raw material-grade mass production companies.
The sago starch industry chain can be broken down into five key segments: "agricultural and forestry cultivation - raw material storage - mechanical processing - graded products - and end-use applications," forming a typical vertical structure of "resources - primary processing - secondary processing."
Upstream: Sago palm cultivation and raw material supply
Crop characteristics: Sago palm (Metroxylon sagu) is harvested every 10-12 years. Each plant produces 250-300 kg of fresh pith, containing 18-38% starch. Its economic lifespan is limited, requiring crop rotation. Regional Distribution: 90% of global production capacity is concentrated in Indonesia (Kalimantan and Sulawesi), Malaysia (Sarawak), and Papua New Guinea. Rivers crisscross these three regions, facilitating the transport of logs by river. China lacks large-scale plantations and relies almost 100% on imported logs or raw starch.
Supply Model: A mix of plantations and smallholders, with logs transported by river to factories after felling. Supply chain bottlenecks lie in logging permits and logistics levels, leading to price fluctuations of 30% between good and bad years.
