Scope of the Report

Osteodontokeratoplasty (OOKP), also known as "tooth for eye", is a unique corneal transplantation technique. The principle of Osteodontokeratoplasty is to transfer the root of the patient's tooth and part of the surrounding bone and ligaments to the eye to fix a small transparent plastic cylinder (i.e. artificial cornea). The surgical process is divided into two stages. In the first stage, the doctor first removes one of the patient's canine teeth and the surrounding bones and ligaments, then repairs the tooth into a bolt shape, drills a hole in the middle, inserts an artificial cornea, and then implants the artificial cornea into the patient's cheek to cultivate new blood vessels. In the second stage, three to six months later, the complex with soft tissue growth is removed and sutured to the surface of the patient's eye. Patients who undergo this operation are usually completely blind people who cannot restore their vision through traditional corneal transplantation surgery, or patients who have lost their vision due to severe damage to the cornea and eyelids. However, the technology cannot restore vision to patients who have lost their sight due to damage to the optic nerve or retina.

Corneal disease is the second most common blinding eye disease after cataracts. There are about 5 million patients in China, and the number is increasing at a rate of 100,000 per year. However, due to the scarcity of donated corneas, the number of corneal transplants in China is only about 5,000 per year, which is far from meeting market demand. Internationally, after years of research and improvement by Professor Falcinelli and his team, the success rate of the operation has reached 80% to 90%. Many patients who underwent surgery to restore their vision 20 years ago are still able to maintain their vision. This technology has brought light to more people who are blind due to corneal eye diseases through modern science and technology. The procedure of bone-tooth artificial cornea transplantation is relatively complicated, but the use of materials from one's own body tissue will significantly reduce the damage to the patient caused by rejection and reduce the risk of complications. This technology is more intuitive, fast and effective than traditional corneal transplantation. In addition to Italy, doctors in the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan and other countries have also tried and mastered this technology. At present, there are no more than 10 ophthalmology centers in the world that can perform this operation. In summary, Osteodontokeratoplasty is a complex but effective eye surgery that offers new hope to patients who cannot restore their vision through traditional methods.
