Scope of the Report

The global Chloranil market size is predicted to grow from US$ 23.28 million in 2025 to US$ 30.47 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 3.9% from 2026 to 2032.

Chloranil (CAS 118-75-2) is an important chlorinated quinone fine chemical, generally supplied as a yellow to yellow-brown crystalline powder with strong electron-accepting, oxidizing, dehydrogenating, and crosslinking properties. Industrial production mainly involves the chlorination of phenol or the chlorination and oxidation of hydroquinone. Key upstream materials include phenol, hydroquinone, chlorine, hydrochloric acid, oxidizing agents, process solvents, and environmental treatment materials. Major downstream customers include dye and organic pigment manufacturers, pharmaceutical and steroid intermediate producers, agrochemical intermediate companies, rubber and polymer manufacturers, and other specialty chemical producers. The global effective production capacity was estimated at approximately 9,200 tonnes in 2025, while sales volume reached about 4,087 tonnes. The average ex-works price was around USD 5,823 per tonne, and the industry gross margin generally ranged from 20% to 28%.

The global chloranil market is in a mature stage of development, with relatively limited demand and industrial supply concentrated mainly in China and India. Europe, North America, and Japan depend largely on imported material. Competition is not determined solely by nameplate capacity, as downstream customers place significant emphasis on purity, impurity levels, batch consistency, supply reliability, and regulatory compliance. The industry continues to have a certain amount of idle capacity, and the impact of new facilities will depend primarily on actual operating rates and the progress of customer qualification.

Dyes and organic pigments remain the largest application segment, supported by demand for high-performance pigments in automotive coatings, industrial coatings, packaging inks, engineering plastics, and color masterbatches. Pharmaceutical and steroid intermediate synthesis requires tighter quality control and generally provides higher value despite its smaller volume contribution. Agrochemical, rubber, and polymer applications provide additional demand, although traditional direct agricultural uses have continued to decline and are unlikely to become a major source of future growth.

Manufacturing development will increasingly focus on reaction yield, purification efficiency, impurity control, and cleaner production. Phenol-based routes benefit from stable raw material availability and relatively competitive costs, but they require effective control of chlorination reactions, chlorinated by-products, and wastewater. Hydroquinone-based routes can provide better product consistency but are generally associated with higher feedstock costs. As quality requirements increase, low levels of chlorinated by-products and trace metals, consistent color, and a narrow melting range will become important areas of product differentiation.

The chloranil market is expected to maintain moderate growth, supported by high-performance organic pigments, pharmaceutical intermediate outsourcing, increasing penetration of high-purity industrial grades, and the expansion of Asian specialty chemical supply chains. Key constraints include substitution by alternative oxidants and catalytic dehydrogenation processes, cyclical demand in the pigment industry, rising environmental compliance costs, and backward integration by selected downstream customers. Producers with reliable facilities, effective environmental treatment systems, and long-term customer relationships are expected to strengthen their positions, leading to a gradual increase in industry concentration.
