Scope of the Report

The global Bioplastics (Bio-plastics) market size is predicted to grow from US$ 4,989 million in 2025 to US$ 14,503 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 16.6% from 2026 to 2032.

Bioplastics refer to plastic materials that are bio-based, biodegradable, or both, and should not be understood as a single polymer category. Major commercial materials include polylactic acid, polyhydroxyalkanoates, polybutylene succinate, polybutylene adipate terephthalate, thermoplastic starch, bio-based polyethylene, bio-based polypropylene, bio-based polyethylene terephthalate, bio-based polyamide and related compounded blends. It is important to distinguish bio-based content from biodegradability, as some bio-based plastics are durable and non-biodegradable, while some biodegradable plastics can still be derived from fossil-based feedstocks.

From an industrial perspective, bioplastics are mainly supplied as resin pellets, compounds, masterbatches, films, sheets, fibers and molded products. Major production and consumption regions include China, the United States, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, France, Brazil, Thailand, Japan and South Korea. Key applications include packaging, disposable foodservice products, agricultural films, textile fibers, consumer goods, automotive parts, electrical and electronic components, medical materials and 3D printing materials, with packaging and single-use products representing the most commercially mature end-use areas.

In 2025, global bioplastics production reached approximately 1.65–1.75 million tonnes, mainly consisting of polylactic acid, bio-based polyamide, bio-based polyethylene, bio-based polyethylene terephthalate, polybutylene adipate terephthalate, polybutylene succinate, polyhydroxyalkanoates and starch-based blends. Due to differences in polymer type, certification level, processing performance and regional supply structure, the average FOB price of mainstream bioplastic resins and compounds was approximately USD 2,900–3,600 per tonne, with commodity packaging-grade materials positioned at the lower end and high-performance bio-based engineering plastics and emerging biodegradable materials positioned at the higher end.

The global bioplastics market is shifting from policy-led substitution toward broader supply chain collaboration and industrial-scale adoption. In the past, bioplastics were primarily positioned as environmentally preferable substitutes for conventional plastics, with demand mainly supported by plastic restrictions, brand-owner carbon reduction commitments and consumer preference for sustainable materials. The growth logic is now expanding toward material performance improvement, cost reduction through scale and wider application development. Packaging remains the most mature demand entry point, as food packaging, flexible packaging, shopping bags, courier packaging and disposable foodservice products continue to support demand for PLA, PBAT, TPS and related blends. At the same time, bio-based polyamide, bio-based polyethylene, bio-based polypropylene and bio-based polyethylene terephthalate are moving into automotive, electrical and electronic, textile and durable consumer goods applications, indicating that bioplastics are evolving beyond compostable single-use materials into a broader low-carbon materials platform.

The main challenges come from cost, performance, certification and end-of-life infrastructure. Most bioplastics remain more expensive than conventional fossil-based plastics, while heat resistance, barrier performance, flexibility, processing window and real-world degradation conditions vary significantly across polymer types. As a result, downstream users often need to revalidate formulations, tooling and supply chains before adopting bioplastic alternatives. In addition, terms such as biodegradable, bio-based and compostable are still frequently confused in market communication, and inadequate certification systems, labeling rules and waste treatment infrastructure may weaken trust among consumers and brand owners. Over the next few years, companies with secure feedstock access, credible certification systems, scalable supply capacity and close downstream co-development capabilities will be better positioned to capture growth, especially in packaging, agricultural films, textile fibers, automotive lightweight materials and high-performance bio-based engineering plastics.
