Scope of the Report

The global Polyimide Film for Batteries market size is predicted to grow from US$ 188 million in 2025 to US$ 316 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 7.9% from 2026 to 2032.

Battery-grade polyimide film is a high-temperature-resistant electrical insulating material—based on a polyimide substrate—designed for use in lithium-ion batteries, energy storage systems, and consumer electronics batteries; it encompasses insulating films, adhesive-coated PI tapes, and die-cut insulating components. This material is typically employed for insulating battery tabs, protecting cell termination areas, wrapping wound cores or individual cells, isolating high-voltage sections within battery modules, and serving as high-temperature masking during the battery manufacturing process. Its core characteristics include excellent heat resistance, high dielectric strength, and strong dimensional stability, as well as a certain degree of resistance to electrolytes, acids, bases, and automated assembly processes. In 2025, the global production volume of battery-grade polyimide film is projected to reach approximately 5.6 K MT.

Continuous expansion of electric vehicle and energy storage batteries is pushing internal battery insulation materials from standard PET tapes and protective films toward functional films with better heat resistance, flame retardancy and electrolyte resistance. Battery-use polyimide film is well suited to tabs, termination areas and local high-temperature zones. In fast-charging cells, large cylindrical cells, prismatic cells and pouch cells, the material must meet requirements for automated application, thermal endurance, insulation performance and low extractables.

On the supply side, this market is not the same as the generic PI base-film market; competition is centered more on coating, lamination, slitting, die-cutting and customer qualification capability. International suppliers usually have advantages in material platforms, automotive qualification and global customer service, while Chinese suppliers are more flexible in lithium-battery supply chain integration, fast sampling, cost control and customized die-cut delivery. As battery manufacturers raise requirements for yield, traceability and automation efficiency, suppliers with stable clean coating capability, electrolyte-resistant adhesive systems and batch consistency are more likely to secure long-term orders.

In the coming years, growth will mainly come from safer power-battery designs, higher-voltage energy storage systems, thinner consumer batteries and upgraded thermal-runaway protection in battery packs. The market will still face pressure from PI base-film costs, battery material cost reduction, substitution from PET and PP-based films, and long customer qualification cycles. However, in high-temperature, high-voltage and high-reliability applications, the performance position of PI materials should support growth above that of ordinary industrial tapes."
