Scope of the Report
The global Beaver Fur market size is predicted to grow from US$ 76.30 million in 2025 to US$ 142 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 9.3% from 2026 to 2032.
Beaver Fur refers to the pelt obtained from beavers (species: Castor canadensis / Castor fiber). It is classified as a small, fine fur, characterized by a coat consisting of coarse outer guard hairs and a soft, dense underfur. The underfur has microscopic barbs that interlock perfectly during processing, making the final product exceptionally dense, supple, and water-resistant. Historically one of the world‘s most valuable furs, once worth more than sable or seal, beaver fur was primarily used for felt hats and is now mainly used for high-end fur garments, accessories, and home goods.
Beaver fur, with one of the highest underfur densities in the animal kingdom (up to 23,000 hairs/cm²), is undergoing a structural shift from “felt hat material” to “sustainable luxury fur.” On pricing, top-quality northern North American beaver pelts averaged $20–25 in 2025, while southern and Eurasian beaver pelts (lower density, smaller size) fetched only $10–15. The 2022–2024 “Yellowstone”-driven cowboy hat boom temporarily inflated hatter-grade (guard hair) prices, but the trend faded in 2025; garment-grade sheared pelts (underfur-focused) showed stronger price resilience due to stable demand. Institutional procurement—such as Alaska State Troopers’ specification for fur hats rated to -40°C—provides a floor for hatter-grade pelts. On margins, Chinese processors (Huasi, Hebei Xingye) maintain 20–25% gross margins via integrated tanning and scale exports, while Indigenous direct-harvest and hand-tanning models in North America retain higher margins but at very low volumes. Downstream primary applications are high-end sheared garments and accessories, with incremental demand from extreme-cold military gear—Logistik Unicorp has developed beaver-fur mittens rated to -50°C, citing beaver as the optimal Arctic natural material. Luxury brands such as Prada (beaver cuffs) and Zilli (beaver collars) sustain stable high-end demand, while Rick Owens and others have announced fur-free policies, partially offset by the “eco-friendly” narrative of wild beaver fur as an invasive species byproduct. Cost transmission: upstream trapping is highly fragmented—hundreds of thousands of trappers supply millions of wild pelts annually in North America, limiting supply stability for large-scale procurement. Landscape is structured as: fragmented trapping → concentrated auction houses (Fur Harvesters Auction, OHL) → Chinese processing/tanning → downstream brands (luxury, military, hat makers). Eurasian beaver (Castor fiber) has limited commercial supply due to strict European wildlife protection and fur trade regulations, forming only small regional markets in Russia and a few Eastern European countries. Uncertainties include: tightening European animal welfare regulations and blanket fur bans (NYFW, Australian Fashion Week) pressuring brand decisions; post-boom demand for hatter-grade pelts; Etsy’s 2026 fur sales ban disrupting small trapper/artisan channels; and sanctions affecting Russian-origin Eurasian beaver trade. Conclusion: Beaver fur is in a structural transition between shrinking traditional functional markets (felt hats) and slowly growing sustainable luxury/military replacement markets. Core drivers are the sustainable narrative of beaver as invasive species byproduct and the irreplaceable natural insulation/waterproofing in extreme cold. The structural feature is fragmented upstream, concentrated auctions, and polarized downstream brands—whether the eco-friendly narrative can sustainably offset animal welfare pressures will determine the sector’s medium-term trajectory.
