Scope of the Report

The global China Cedarwood Oil market size is predicted to grow from US$ 932 million in 2025 to US$ 1,346 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% from 2026 to 2032.

Global sales of China cedarwood oil reached 9,401 tons in 2025, with an average price of US$101,352 per ton.

China Cedar wood oil is an essential oil derived from the Chinese Cedar wood and has applications in the form of medicine due to its antibacterial and fungicide properties. Cedrol, widdrol, thujopsene, alpha cederene, beta cedrene, and a range of sesquiterpenes are the key components involved in the China Cedar wood oil. The China Cedar Wood oil has found applications in art, in industrial applications and fragrance industry.

The supply of raw materials for Chinese cedar oil is significantly dependent on wild resources and geographically concentrated. Globally, approximately 30%-40% of production comes from southern China (Guizhou, Sichuan, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangxi, etc.). These subtropical humid climate zones (warm, rainy, and well-drained) are ideal for cedar tree growth and result in abundant accumulation of sesquiterpenes. Raw material costs account for 45-55% of total costs. While cedar is a perennial tree (wild or semi-wild) requiring no planting investment, raw material acquisition is strictly limited by forestry resource management policies. Furthermore, the extraction rate is moderate (1%-6%), requiring approximately 15-100 kg of dry wood to extract 1 kg of crude oil, and the heartwood and root wood are of higher quality than sapwood and branches, resulting in a limited supply of high-quality raw materials. Labor costs account for 20-25%, as cedar logging, transportation, slicing, and pre-distillation processing require significant manual labor, especially in mountainous wild-harvesting areas where mechanization is low. Processing costs account for approximately 25-30%. Steam distillation is a mature process, but the crude oil is darker in color (even darker if dry distillation is used), requiring further refining and fractionation to increase added value. It's worth noting that Chinese cedar oil, Texas cedar oil, and Atlas cedar oil are similar in composition (all containing cedrene, juniperene, and juniper linalool), but their aroma characteristics differ significantly—Chinese cedar oil leans towards a richer, smoky woody tone, while Texas cedar oil is sweeter and Atlas cedar oil is more delicate. Therefore, these three products compete differentiatedly in the high-end fragrance market. Quality control and testing costs account for 10-15%, requiring GC-MS to ensure that the juniper linalool content (≥10%) and the proportions of cedrene and juniperene meet standards, and testing physical indicators such as refractive index (1.5030-1.5080) and density (0.941-0.966). Overall, Chinese cedar oil is a low-to-medium priced, resource-dependent, and widely used natural essential oil. Its cost structure is influenced by multiple factors, including the sustainability of wild cedar resources, labor costs, and the depth of refining and processing. It holds an important position in the fragrance industry as a sandalwood substitute and fixative, but faces competition from both Texas cedar oil (high production volume, low price) and Atlas cedar oil (high quality, high price).
