Scope of the Report

The global Martensitic Heat Resistant Steels market size is predicted to grow from US$ 3,450 million in 2025 to US$ 4,560 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 4.0% from 2026 to 2032.

Global sales of martensitic heat resistant steel reached 2,469,000 tons in 2025, with an average price of $1,428 per ton.

Martensitic stainless steel is a specific type of stainless steel alloy that can be hardened and tempered through multiple ways of aging/heat treatment. The new martensitic/ferritic super heat-resistant 9–12% Cr steels (always mass%) have been recognized as an alter- native for widely used high-strength austenitic stainless steels because of their favorable physical properties (ther- mal expansion and heat conductance) and lower price.

Raw material costs account for 70-85% of the total cost of martensitic heat-resistant steel. The main raw materials include: scrap steel and pig iron as iron-based raw materials to provide the basic framework; ferrochrome (10-18%), a core element for forming the passivation film and hardenability, accounting for approximately 15-25% of the cost; nickel added in high-performance grades (1-5%) to stabilize austenite and improve toughness, accounting for 10-20% of the cost; microalloying elements such as molybdenum, tungsten, and vanadium used to improve high-temperature strength and tempering stability, accounting for 5-10% of the cost; and carbon content controlled at 0.1-1.0% to adjust hardness and strength. Because martensitic heat-resistant steel typically has a lower chromium content than austenitic stainless steel (10-18% vs. 18-25%), and contains little or no expensive nickel, its raw material costs are relatively low, which is the basis for its price advantage.

From a cost structure perspective, raw material procurement dominates (70-85%), with fluctuations in ferrochrome prices having the greatest impact on costs. Energy and heat treatment costs account for approximately 10-15%, including high energy consumption in processes such as electric furnace smelting, quenching, and tempering, particularly the significant costs associated with vacuum heat treatment (VIM/VAR). Processing and manufacturing costs account for 5-10%, due to the need for forging, precision machining, and strict heat treatment control. Quality inspection and certification account for 3-5%, with aerospace-grade products requiring non-destructive testing, mechanical property testing, and material certification. It is worth noting that ordinary martensitic steel (such as 2Cr13) has relatively low costs due to mature processes and simple alloy elements, while high-end martensitic aging steel, requiring the addition of precious metals such as nickel, cobalt, and molybdenum and undergoing precision heat treatment, can cost 10-20 times more than ordinary grades (approximately 180,000-250,000 RMB/ton), and is mainly used in high-end fields such as aerospace.
