Scope of the Report

The global Mulch Plastic Film market size is predicted to grow from US$ 13,301 million in 2025 to US$ 16,373 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 3.1% from 2026 to 2032.

Global sales of mulch plastic film reached 899,000 tons in 2025, with an average price of US$15,123 per ton.

Plastic mulch functions to warm the soil, conserve moisture, and prevent nutrient leaching. It also protects ground-level fruit from soil pathogens. However, plastic mulch restricts rainwater from reaching to the roots. Therefore, drip irrigation should generally be used with plastic mulch.

The main raw materials for mulch plastic film are linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) and low-density polyethylene (LDPE) as the base resin, accounting for 80-90%. LLDPE is the preferred choice due to its excellent tensile strength and puncture resistance. The melt index (MI) is typically controlled between 0.3-2.0 g/10min to ensure film-forming processability. To improve the weather resistance, aging resistance, and functionality of the film, an additive system comprising 5-10% of the formulation is required. This includes light stabilizers (hindered amines), antioxidants (phenols/phosphites), anti-dripping agents (glycerol fatty acid esters), and color masterbatches (carbon black, titanium dioxide, etc.) for specific functions. In recent years, with increasingly stringent policies on "white pollution" control, biodegradable mulch films utilize renewable resources such as PLA (polylactic acid), PBAT (butylene adipate-butylene terephthalate copolymer), and starch as raw materials. PLA originates from corn starch fermentation, while PBAT is derived from petrochemical-based monomer polymerization. These bio-based materials are 50-150% more expensive than PE but can achieve complete biodegradability.

Cost Structure Characteristics: The mulch film industry is a large-scale agricultural asset industry highly sensitive to raw materials. Its cost structure exhibits the typical characteristics of "raw material costs absolutely dominating, and processing fees resulting in low profit margins." Raw material costs account for 75-85% of total costs. The price of polyethylene resin is highly correlated with the international crude oil market; a fluctuation of 1000 yuan per ton of PE price can directly lead to a change of 800-900 yuan per ton in the production cost of agricultural mulch film. Therefore, companies generally adopt a pricing model of "raw material cost + processing fee" to transfer risk. Processing and manufacturing costs (electricity, labor, equipment depreciation) account for only 8-12%, reflecting the industry's low technological barriers and small-scale equipment investment (approximately 500,000-1,000,000 yuan per production line). Packaging and transportation costs account for 3-5%. Due to the large volume and light weight of agricultural mulch film, the transportation radius is usually limited to within 500 kilometers. The industry's overall gross profit margin remains at a low level of 8-15%. Company profitability is highly dependent on large-scale production and bargaining power in raw material procurement. Small workshops are accelerating their exit from the market due to rising environmental compliance costs.
