Scope of the Report

The global Alkaline Hydrogen Production Electrolysis Cell PPS Diaphragm market size is predicted to grow from US$ 105 million in 2025 to US$ 1,898 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 52.1% from 2026 to 2032.

Alkaline Hydrogen Production Electrolysis Cell PPS Diaphragm is a functional diaphragm made of polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) as the main material. It is the core component for isolating the cathode and anode in the alkaline hydrogen production electrolysis cell. It is used to isolate the cathode and anode to prevent the mixing of hydrogen and oxygen, while allowing hydroxide ions (OH⁻) to be freely transmitted during the electrolysis process, thereby improving the electrolysis efficiency. As the "heart" component of the alkaline hydrogen production electrolysis cell, the PPS diaphragm directly determines the key performance indicators of the electrolysis cell, such as the working efficiency, safety, and purity of the output hydrogen. PPS diaphragm exhibits excellent corrosion resistance in a strong alkaline environment, can operate stably for a long time at an operating temperature of 80-100°C without degradation, has good tensile strength and dimensional stability, can withstand mechanical stress and thermal expansion and contraction during the operation of the electrolysis cell, and avoids cross-penetration of hydrogen and oxygen gases due to deformation. After a special hydrophilic treatment, the PPS diaphragm can provide an efficient transmission channel for the hydroxide ions (OH-) in the electrolyte while ensuring air tightness.

With its excellent alkali corrosion resistance, hydrophilicity, mechanical strength and stability, the PPS diaphragm of the alkaline hydrogen production electrolyzer occupies more than 50% of the market share of the alkaline hydrogen production electrolyzer diaphragm market, among which Chinese companies have performed relatively well in technology catch-up and capacity expansion. At present, the PPS diaphragm accounts for about 10% of the total cost of the electrolyzer, with a high cost performance. This "small material, big impact" feature makes the PPS diaphragm one of the key breakthroughs in electrolyzer technology innovation. From the perspective of regional market demand, PPS diaphragms show obvious differentiation characteristics. The European market is dominated by high-quality demand, and composite diaphragms are mostly used, accounting for more than 50% of the global market share. Germany and the Netherlands promote the "electrolyzer cluster" plan, and the demand for PPS diaphragms is developing in the direction of large standards (≥2000Nm³/h) and low power consumption (≤4.0kWh/Nm³). In the Asia-Pacific region, the Japanese market is dominated by local companies. With its technological advantages, Japan's Toray occupies more than 80% of the PPS diaphragm market share in the country, forming a competitive advantage in the industrial chain. The Chinese market is growing rapidly and will maintain a long-term growth trend. Chinese electrolyzers mostly use second-generation pure PPS diaphragms. Driven by government policies, companies have increased their investment in the research and development of third-generation composite diaphragms, and the process of domestic substitution has accelerated. The North American market focuses on the cost of the entire life cycle and has high requirements for the durability and maintenance convenience of PPS diaphragms. The target cost of electrolyzers set by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has directly promoted the technological innovation of diaphragm materials, such as the development of self-cleaning PPS diaphragms to reduce the frequency of maintenance. From the perspective of end-user demand, the trend of large-scale alkaline electrolyzers has increased the requirements for diaphragm dimensional stability and consistency, and the green production concept has prompted the diaphragm manufacturing process to upgrade in the direction of environmental protection.
