Scope of the Report

The global Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) for Ophthalmology market size is predicted to grow from US$ 1,499 million in 2025 to US$ 2,642 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 7.6% from 2026 to 2032.

Ophthalmic optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a type of ophthalmic diagnostic device that utilizes the principle of low-coherence optical interference to perform non-contact, non-invasive, in vivo tomographic imaging of the fine internal structures of ocular tissues. The system emits near-infrared light into the eye and, by analyzing the interference signal between the tissue-reflected light and the reference light, reconstructs continuous axial scans into two-dimensional cross-sectional images and three-dimensional volumetric data. This allows physicians to observe tissues such as the retina, macula, optic nerve fiber layer, choroid, cornea, anterior chamber, angle, iris, and lens.

Based on imaging technology, ophthalmic OCT can be divided into time-domain OCT, frequency-domain or spectral-domain OCT, and swept-frequency OCT. Frequency-domain OCT has higher axial resolution, mature software algorithms, and a widespread clinical installation base; swept-frequency OCT typically uses a high-speed tunable light source and a longer center wavelength, offering advantages in penetrating deep tissues such as the choroid and sclera, wide-area scanning, whole-eye imaging, and high-speed blood flow acquisition. Building upon traditional structural OCT, OCT angiography compares motion signals in repeated scans to visualize retinal and choroidal microvessels without the injection of fluorescein or indocyanine green contrast agents. Clinical equipment can also integrate color fundus photography, scanning laser ophthalmoscopy, fundus autofluorescence, corneal topography, axial length biometry, and surgical microscopy, forming a multimodal, anterior and posterior segment integrated, or intraoperative navigation platform.

The global ophthalmic OCT market is rapidly evolving from single-function retinal structural imaging devices to high-speed scanning, ultra-wide-angle, full-eye coverage, multimodal fusion, AI analysis, and distributed diagnostic platforms. The demand is primarily driven by an aging population and the increasing burden of chronic eye diseases such as diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, and glaucoma.

In terms of technological upgrades, scanning OCT is expanding from high-end research equipment to the clinical diagnostic market. Higher scanning speeds, deeper tissue penetration, and wider scanning ranges enable devices to cover the macula, optic disc, peripheral retina, choroid, and even the entire anterior segment in a single acquisition. Topcon Triton emphasizes deep fundus imaging, while Heidelberg ANTERION focuses on corneal, anterior chamber, and lens quantification, demonstrating the market's expansion from single-point posterior segment imaging to posterior segment, wide-area, and full-eye platforms. Multimodal and automation are another important trend. OCT is being integrated with color fundus cameras, SLO, OCTA, corneal topography, and biometry to reduce the number of examination devices and improve patient turnover. Topcon's robotic OCT can automatically align, focus, and acquire images with a single button, reducing reliance on senior technicians and driving the adoption of the device in general hospitals, primary care clinics, screening facilities, and remote image reading networks.

Artificial intelligence will become a significant source of product differentiation and software revenue in the future. ZEISS has launched an AI-assisted OCT interpretation tool integrated into the CIRRUS platform to automatically identify abnormal macular scans and improve clinical workflow efficiency; Heidelberg is also introducing automatic choroidal quantification, hereditary retinal disease identification, and other advanced image analysis through its software ecosystem. Automatic stratification, lesion detection, disease progression comparison, image quality control, and patient risk stratification will gradually transition from research functions to standard clinical capabilities. Future market growth will primarily come from existing equipment upgrades, high-end feature enhancements, AI software services, penetration into primary healthcare, and expansion into emerging markets. However, medical device registration, clinical validation, data compatibility, cybersecurity, and global after-sales service still constitute high barriers to entry.
