Vue d'ensemble
Scope of the Report
Bismuth (symbol: Bi) is a brittle, crystalline, post-transition metal with atomic number 83. It is the heaviest stable element in the periodic table's nitrogen group (Group VA). Characterized by its low thermal conductivity, strong diamagnetism (highest among metals), and low melting point (271.5°C), bismuth exhibits a distinctive iridescent oxide layer that gives it a pinkish hue.
Chemically, it is relatively inert under standard conditions but reacts with strong acids and oxidizing agents. Though traditionally labeled as non-radioactive, bismuth has an extraordinarily long alpha decay half-life (~1.9×10¹⁹ years), making it technically radioactive but effectively stable for practical purposes.
Evolution of the supply and demand pattern
The intensification of supply concentration: China's bismuth reserves account for 75% of the global total, and its production share exceeds 80%. Moreover, the main production areas are subject to dual constraints of environmental protection policies (such as the impact of the Central environmental protection inspection team's entry into Hunan in 2024 on raw material supply) and export controls (such as the restrictions on the export of bismuth metal products in 2025), which will further intensify the global supply tightness in the short term.
Diversified expansion of demand
Emerging industry-driven: The demand for high-purity bismuth in fields such as photovoltaic welding strips, semiconductor materials, and superconducting research is growing rapidly, with the demand for photovoltaic welding strips accounting for 13%.
The upgrading of the pharmaceutical and electronic industries: The application proportion of high-purity products such as bismuth nitrite and bismuth oxide in the manufacturing of pharmaceuticals (gastrointestinal drugs) and electronic components has been increasing year by year.
Price and market fluctuations
Short-term high price fluctuations: Affected by China's export control, traders' stockpiling and overseas essential demand purchases (European prices rose to 9.5 US dollars per pound), the price of bismuth exceeded 130,000 yuan per ton in 2025. In the future, it may continue to fluctuate with policy adjustments and international supply and demand games.
Long-term cost pressure is emerging: The static reserve-production ratio of global bismuth resources is only 24 years, and the restricted development of main minerals (the decline in the grade of lead and zinc ores) may lead to an increase in raw material costs.
Policies and strategic opportunities
Global supply chain reshaping: The United States and other Western countries rely on China for bismuth supplies (about 66% of the United States' imports come from China), but they have no domestic reserves and the research and development of substitutes lags behind, providing an opportunity for Chinese enterprises to compete for pricing power.
Green transformation promotion: Bismuth, as a "green metal", is gradually replacing toxic materials such as lead and cadmium. Environmental protection policies (such as the EU REACH regulation) will stimulate the penetration of high-purity bismuth in fields such as flame retardants and eco-friendly coatings.
