Scope of the Report
The global 3-Methyl-1,1-diphenylurea market size is predicted to grow from US$ 11.74 million in 2025 to US$ 19.45 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.0% from 2026 to 2032.
In 2025, global 3-Methyl-1,1-diphenylurea capacity 400 Tons, sales reached approximately 300 Tons, with an average market price of around 39 USD/Kg, industrial gross margin 28%.
3-Methyl-1,1-diphenylurea is a specialized aromatic urea positioned primarily as a stabilizer for nitrocellulose- and nitrate-ester-based energetic materials. Also known as Akardite II or N′-methyl-N,N-diphenylurea, it carries CAS No. 13114-72-2, molecular formula C₁₄H₁₄N₂O and molecular weight 226.27. Commercial material is generally supplied as a white to off-white crystalline powder, with a melting range of approximately 170–174°C. Propellant-grade specifications may limit moisture and ash to 0.1% each, chlorine to 0.02%, residual diphenylamine to 0.1%, and pH to 6.5–7.5. Laboratory grades typically range from 95% to above 99% assay.
The principal application of 3-Methyl-1,1-diphenylurea is the stabilization of single-base, double-base and nitrate-ester propellants during storage. Nitrocellulose and nitroglycerin gradually generate nitrogen oxides and acidic degradation products that accelerate autocatalytic decomposition. Akardite II reacts with these species, slows stabilizer depletion and extends the safe service life of propellant formulations. Typical stabilizer loading can range from about 0.5% to 5%, with higher ratios used in selected nitrate-ester systems. The compound is also used as an analytical reference in propellant-aging studies and as a pharmacopoeial related-substance standard for temozolomide; the latter is a quality-control application rather than an active pharmaceutical use.
Manufacturing capability is defined by impurity control and application validation rather than nominal assay alone. Production involves construction of an unsymmetrical substituted urea structure from diphenylamine-related intermediates, a methylamine component and a carbonyl source, followed by crystallization, washing and controlled drying. Propellant customers monitor residual diphenylamine, chloride, moisture, ash, particle size and melting range because these variables influence compatibility, migration and long-term stabilization behavior. Qualification generally combines formulation trials, accelerated aging, heat-flow or microcalorimetric testing, chromatographic measurement of stabilizer consumption and full-lot traceability.
Future demand will be shaped by ammunition life-extension programs, lower-nitrosamine stabilizer strategies and localization of strategic chemical supply. Aging military inventories require repeated measurement of residual stabilizer and daughter products, supporting demand for analytical standards and qualification-grade material. Advanced propellant development is also emphasizing stabilizers with low volatility, limited migration and favorable toxicological profiles relative to traditional diphenylamine systems. Competitive differentiation will increasingly depend on impurity fingerprints, stabilizer-consumption curves, long-term aging data, regulatory documentation and consistent delivery into controlled energetic-material supply chains.
