Scope of the Report

The global Glycyrrhiza Glabra Extract market size is predicted to grow from US$ 296 million in 2025 to US$ 459 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.6% from 2026 to 2032.

In 2025, global sales volume of Glycyrrhiza glabra extract reached 14,000 metric tons, with an average price of $22,353 per ton.

Glycyrrhiza glabra, a flowering plant of the bean family Fabaceae, from the root of which a sweet, aromatic flavouring can be extracted. The liquorice plant is a herbaceous perennial legume native to the Western Asia and southern Europe. It is not botanically related to anise, star anise, or fennel, which are sources of similar flavouring compounds. Liquorice is used as a flavouring in candies and tobacco, particularly in some European and West Asian countries. Glycyrrhiza glabra extracts have been used in herbalism and traditional medicine.

The raw material for this extract consists of the dried roots and rhizomes of Glycyrrhiza glabra. The plant is primarily distributed across the Mediterranean coast, West Asia, Central Asia, and regions in China such as Xinjiang and Gansu. Due to the difficulty of large-scale artificial cultivation, supply relies predominantly on wild resources; the plants require 5 to 8 years of growth to meet standards for medicinal extraction. Its key skin-brightening component, glabridin, is present in very low concentrations—only about 0.2%—meaning one ton of Glycyrrhiza glabra yields merely 100g of glabridin. This scarcity rivals that of gold, and the supply of raw materials is significantly influenced by climate, ecological factors, and government policies. Regarding cost structure, raw materials account for approximately 35%–45% of the total cost for standard food-grade crude extracts, with dried roots purchased at roughly 6–13 RMB/kg. In contrast, high-purity cosmetic-grade glabridin incurs raw material costs exceeding 50%–60% due to the scarcity of raw materials and complex purification processes. While the international market price once reached as high as 150,000 RMB/kg, it has since dropped to 60,000–80,000 RMB/kg—driven by breakthroughs in technologies such as column chromatography and membrane filtration, as well as the establishment of ton-scale production lines—yet it remains one of the most expensive categories of plant extracts.
