Scope of the Report

The global Cobalt Sulfate market size is predicted to grow from US$ 1,853 million in 2025 to US$ 2,303 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 3.2% from 2026 to 2032.

In 2024, global cobalt sulfate production is 253,000 tons, with an average price of US$7,268 per ton.

Cobalt sulfate is a red to rose-pink, toxic inorganic metallic salt that is water-soluble and has various applications, including use in rechargeable batteries (especially lithium-ion batteries), as a component in fertilizers and animal feed to provide the essential micronutrient cobalt, and in the electrochemical and paint industries. It also serves as a catalyst in various chemical processes.

Over the past two years, the cobalt sulfate market has undergone a structural shift in demand, shifting from a focus on battery applications to a simultaneous shift toward batteries, recycling, and policy. Power batteries remain the core end market for cobalt sulfate, particularly high-purity cobalt sulfate used in precursors and cathode materials. Despite accelerating research and development of low-cobalt and cobalt-free cathode technologies, the rigid demand for battery-grade cobalt sulfate from electric vehicles and consumer batteries remains the cornerstone of the market in the short term.

In the upstream supply chain, key players are copper and cobalt mines (particularly those in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Australia, Russia, and some South American copper mines) and primary smelters. The midstream segment comprises refineries involved in sulfation, solvent extraction, crystallization, and refining. This segment is concentrated in China, South Korea, Japan, and a few Western countries. Due to China's significant share of global refining and battery material processing, much of the cobalt sulfate production capacity is concentrated in chemical and battery material companies in mainland China. The downstream sector is primarily comprised of cathode material manufacturers, battery manufacturers, and battery recycling companies. Recycling is increasingly becoming a supplementary path to mitigate raw material risks. Battery recyclers use wet or thermochemical processes and reprocessing techniques to recover cobalt sulfate, which can then be re-processed into cobalt sulfate or directly fed into precursor production lines. This is crucial for long-term supply resilience. Representative companies in the upstream and mining sectors include large mining and smelting groups such as Glencore and Eurasian Resources Group. In the recycling and secondary raw material sector, companies such as Primobius and Electra are expanding their capabilities to regenerate cobalt sulfate from battery recycling.

In terms of production capacity and regional distribution, public data reveals two key trends: one is the traditional structure of concentrated mineral resources, exemplified by the Democratic Republic of the Congo, but with refining capacity relocated overseas (particularly to China); the other is the recent construction or expansion of refining/cobalt sulfate projects (some with nominal capacities ranging from thousands to several tens of thousands of tons of cobalt sulfate equivalent) in Europe, the United States, and Canada to secure domestic battery supply chains. This has exacerbated the impact of geopolitical and trade policies on delivery cadence in the short term. Regarding costs and gross profit margins, the main costs of cobalt sulfate production include ore raw materials (or from refining intermediates such as cobalt hydroxide/sulfation intermediates), chemical reagents (sulfuric acid, reducing agents, solvents, etc.), energy consumption and processing costs of the crystallization/drying process, as well as compliance and wastewater and waste residue treatment costs. When prices are high, the gross profit margins of refining and crystal plants can increase significantly, but they will also be compressed to low or even negative profit levels during cyclical low prices. Battery-grade cobalt sulfate processing companies can achieve gross profit margins of 20% or even higher during favorable price cycles, but when prices are weak and compressed by raw material premiums, gross profit margins may fall to single digits or even losses (the specific value is greatly affected by the company's scale, the proportion of long-term and short-term contracts, and cost control capabilities).
